Alex smiled. “We’re connected, Theo. We might not be able to communicate telepathically, but you’ll always feel me right here.” He placed his hand over my heart. “If anything happens to you, I’ll feel it, too. The Syndicate no longer controls me, and I have you to thank for that, Theo. Besides, if I control the veil now, I can always let you slip in once in a while to say hi.” He winked. When had his shy, barely vocal teen become so sentimental?

I leaned back, letting my head hit the headboard. I didn’t say anything, but I continued to rub my chest. My magic had been uneasy since partially reviving Caspian, and it refused to settle.

“You feel him, don’t you?”

I stared back at Alex.

“Your magic feels weird, right?” He pressed a hand to his own chest. “I feel it too. He’s … not gone, but lost. The magic array partially brought him back, but didn’t reunite him with his soul. I think that uneasy feeling is our magic telling us that he’s still out there and needs your help. He’s likely in broken pieces, his husk of a body searching to connect with his soul. The Syndicate will be looking for him, too, but he could be virtually anywhere. I’ll scout the underworld. You keep an eye on things here.”

I nodded.

Alex leaned in, giving me a peck on the forehead. “You’re a good guy, Theo Kingston. Ren is lucky to have you. But if it doesn’t work out, you know where to find me.”

“I heard that!” Ren, who had obviously been eavesdropping from the other side of the door, stormed in and shoved Alex out. “Stay away from him! He’s mine!”

Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I suppressed a laugh. This brute of a demon was unbearably adorable when he was being possessive.

“So?” Once he was sure Alex was gone, he locked the door this time so no one would interrupt us. “I guess we have to search for that bastard now?”

I rolled my eyes. Ren wasn’t just jealous of Alex. There was a time he had been jealous of Caspian as well.

“I did this to him. It’s only right that I fix it.” I tugged on the hem of his shirt, encouraging him to take it off. “Now, where were we? Take off that shirt of yours and crawl back into bed with me. I might be injured, but my tongue and mouth work just fine.”

Ren’s grin turned slow and wicked. “Maybe you’re not a dandelion weed after all.” He leaned closer, possessively claiming my lips. “Looks to me like you’ve rooted yourself exactly where you belong.”
