“In case you want to stay over again. Keep some stuff here. I’ll clear out a drawer for you in my dresser.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I want to.” I open the front door for her to pass through. “Mason keeps a bunch of her hair products in our shower. If you wanted to, you could leave some things, too.”
“That’s different,” she says.
“How?”
“Mason and Tucker are dating.”
“So?”
“So we’re not.”
Yeah, she doesn’t need to remind me of that.
“You’re my best friend. I want you to feel comfortable. And if that means keeping a spare set of contacts and a sleep bonnet and a pair of jeans at my place, I’m more than fine with that,” I tell her. “It’s not an imposition, not in the slightest.”
She purses her lips. “I’ll think about it.”
Which means no.
Chapter 14
Diana
Everyone’s eyes are on me. Everyone is watching as I strip off Barrett’s shirt and toss it onto the locker room bench to change into my practice clothes.
“Who did you hook up with?” Louisa, a full back, leans across her locker to stare at me.
“I didn’t.”
“So whose shirt is that?”
“A friend’s.”
“I don’t see any hickies,” Mischa says.
Terri’s eyes go wide.
“Really. We had a slumber party,” I insist.
Zoe laughs. “You mean a naked slumber party.”
“No, we were fully dressed.”
Rachel and Rebecca make eye contact, not bothering to hide their smirks.
It’s almost like hooking up with some guy would increase my social currency with these girls. They’re more interested in me now than they’ve been since I’ve met them.
“Trust me, if I hooked up with someone last night, I would be in a much better mood.”
And not nearly so confused.
I’m not the type of girl guys want to be with long term. I’m not the type of girl guys want to bring home. I’m not the type of girl who gets a happy-ever-after. I want to go on a date, a real, proper date. I want to be wined and dined and courted. I want to be cherished. I want what I can’t have. College guys? All they’re interested in is getting laid.
Barrett hasn’t mentioned any women. He hasn’t gone out with anyone to my knowledge since I’ve been here. I feel bad for holding him back, and at the same time, I’m glad I don’t have to share him. He’s mine.
