Sienna felt like she’d been sucker punched.

John rested his hand on top of Sienna’s. “What did she say?”

“She could feel him.” She hesitated. “She said he misses you too.”

John faltered back a step and leaned forward, dropping his hands to his legs and sucking in a harsh breath.

She reached for him, and he held up his hand to stop her. “I can’t.”

“I understand.” And she did to a degree. His dragon’s admission to Veronica made her want to sob uncontrollably. She couldn’t begin to imagine what John must be feeling. He lost the only being that had truly had his back. And to have them just out of reach? It was heartbreaking.

I didn’t mean to make him sad, Veronica whispered.

John stood and faced her, the mask he wore snapping back in place.

Sienna pushed down her own emotions. Yes, she was on a mission—for Bella, Lily, her family and clan. But standing in front of John when his ache was tangible in the air around them took it to another level.

This was why Sienna needed to step up and break this damn curse. No more excuses. No more fear. And once it was gone? She would be able to see John’s face when he reunited with his dragon, and then she would be having a serious conversation with him about their future. After today, there was no doubt in her mind that they belonged together.

Chapter 32

Sienna rubbed the back of her neck, trying to relieve the knots of tension that had taken up residence with no known departure date. She had been working nonstop on clan business and trying to get Mia to respond to her with no luck. John had also been working with Megan and occasionally Jonas as they tried to find something in the storybooks and research that would help bring back the sentries.

Which meant Sienna’s morning started first thing with Megan, Ryan, Jonas, and John going over research again.

Megan looked at the piles of papers and books on the desk before sighing. “I can’t find anything that talks about a ritual or what you need to say to bring out the sentries.”

Jonas frowned. “I’ve also done online searches as well and haven’t come up with any reference either.”

Sienna watched John’s expression, frustration evident in his tight eyes. She wanted to tell him and everyone else that they would figure this out.

Before anyone could speak, Tessa burst into the office waving a piece of paper. “We’ve got a new picture from Lily,” she announced, her face pale.

“Let’s see it,” Megan said.

Tessa set it down on top of the stack of papers. The drawing showed two men, one with red wings and one with purple. Lily had drawn hearts on both of their chests, but the thing that set Sienna’s nerves dancing was that she had also drawn the sentry symbol floating above each of their heads and then had drawn dozens of symbols in the air around them.

“That’s got to be Eric and Adam,” Megan said, confirming her suspicions.

“Yes. Which means they’re going to be sentries, right?” Tessa asked.

Sienna stayed quiet, staring at the paper, begging it to tell her what to do. And then something clicked.

“What is it, Sienna? What do you see?” John asked.

Her heart thumped. “I think I know what we need to do.”

“What?” Megan and Tessa asked at the same time.

“We aren’t going to find a ritual because I’m not the one who is supposed to choose the dragon sentries.”

“But you’re the one with dragon song,” Ryan said.

“Exactly! We’ve been looking at this the wrong way. Veronica is the one who has to do it.” She turned to John. “Like when I rested my hand above your heart the other day and she communicated to your dragon. Why else would Lily draw hearts?”

John nodded. “I think you’re on to something.”

“I think so too. Let’s get Adam and Eric.”
