I pushed through the glass doors and nodded to the young lady at the front desk. She pointed me towards where Ally was being taken care of and Cam and I hurried along the hallway, anxious to see how she was doing.

I heard Ruby laughing and when I entered the room, I was happy to see Ally sitting up and laughing with her colleague. James was seated at the side of the bed and nodded when we walked in. I kissed Ally’s forehead and pulled up another chair while Cam did the same.

“You look much better than the last time I saw you.” The color was back in her face and her temperature was obviously down. She’d felt cool when I planted the kiss on her.

“I feel a lot better. Thanks for taking care of me.”

“James is the one to thank. I think it’s time I updated my training so I can be of use in emergencies. What happened with you has highlighted how isolated we are at the stations we visit and how important it is that I’m able to help until the RFDS can arrive. I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I’ve been so focused on treating eye problems, I’ve let my general medicine slip. We’ve been lucky up to now but yesterday our luck ran out. We were fortunate James was still around.”

“It’s a good idea, Drew. You never know when you’ll be needed,” Ruby agreed.

“Did James tell you Rick will meet you in Sydney?” Ally frowned at my statement.

“Yes, he did. I don’t know why I have to go to Sydney, I can be checked out in Dubbo. If anyone thinks I’m staying in a fucking hospital for three months, they are sadly mistaken. I will agree to bed rest, I’m not stupid. I want to protect our baby but I’m not staying in hospital.”

I kind of agreed with Ally. She lived less than five minutes from the hospital and I really believed she would take it easy after her scare. I doubted that she would remain in bed but I was confident she wouldn’t do anything too taxing.

“You’ll have to discuss it with the doctor down in Sydney.”

“I won’t be discussing anything, I’ll be telling them. I’m happy to do as they tell me but in my own home.”

Did I mention I was glad I wasn’t one of her doctors or nurses?

“I hope you do as they ask for your baby and Rick’s sake.”

“I will,” she murmured.

“We had a farewell planned for Saturday night. It’s obvious we can’t have it now but we’ll sort something out when I come back up to Dubbo.”

“I don’t need a farewell, I’ll still be seeing all of you. You will visit?”

We all answered ‘yes’ in unison and Ally smiled.

“How did the rest of the clinic go? How did you manage without both of us?” Ruby gave me a cheeky grin, she knew how valuable she was.

“We cancelled it.” I bit down on my lip so as not to laugh at her shocked expression. Even James snapped his eyes up to me, thinking I was serious.

When Cam burst into laughter, Ruby thumped me on the arm.

“Arsehole.”

I laughed and rubbed the arm where she’d hit me even though it hadn’t hurt.

“I’m not sorry,” Ruby stated when she saw what I was doing.

I shoved both hands into the pockets of my jeans. “Viv and Cam took over bringing the patients through. I consulted and explained the surgery or treatment. Cam did the follow up examinations for the anesthetic and had them fill in the consent forms after he explained everything. We managed. Don’t even start to fucking think we don’t need you though.”

“I know you need me, I shudder to think what the instruments and paperwork would look like otherwise.”

We all erupted into laughter and barely heard the knock at the door. We all turned our heads when Finn shouted, “Oi!”

Standing beside him was the most gorgeous woman I’d ever laid eyes on and I’m sure my jaw hit the floor. When I glanced over at Cam, he was in the same state. I turned back to the woman who had moved to the end of the bed.

She was tall, about five ten. A good fit for my six three. Her hair was almost white it was so blonde and was tied up in a long ponytail which hung over one shoulder. I wondered if the color was natural. Her eyes were grey and reminded me of a stormy outback sky. Her skin unblemished and slightly tanned. She wore knee length blue shorts and a white fitted blouse. The lady had curves in all the right places and because the top buttons of her blouse had been left open, I could see the curve of her beautiful breasts. I wondered who she was and thought Finn was one lucky sonofabitch to know her.

Finn spun towards the goddess. “This is Linda Freemont, your new nurse, Drew.”

Fuck! I stood and took her outstretched hand into mine. Her skin was literally as soft as silk and my cock danced behind the zipper of my jeans. When Cam pushed in and took her hand, introducing himself, I wanted to deck him. Then, the thought hit me – they would be together in Dubbo while I was stuck down in Sydney. I didn’t want the playboy of anesthesia anywhere near her, especially when I wasn’t around. Cam was one hell of a handsome man. Standing around the same height as me, he sported a six-pack physique, as I did. But, he had gorgeous green eyes whereas mine were ordinary brown. Both of us had dark hair but where mine was dead straight, his head was topped with a mass of unruly curls.
