I turned towards where the young man stood and asked, “Hey, Mate, are you drunk?”
“Nope, been working. On my way home now to get that way, though.”
I turned back to find Linda was staring at the floor and she hadn’t lost any of the redness coloring her skin. Placing my fingers under her chin, I lifted her head and stole a kiss.
“Drew!”
“I’m sorry, I won’t embarrass you anymore but you’re so fucking cute when you’re red.”
Linda shook her head and buried her face against my chest. I wrapped my arms around her, kissed the top of her head and held her close. Holding my girl felt like the most natural thing in the world to do and I loved it. And, yes, she was my girl and would be staying that way if I had a say in things.

SWEAT COATED OUR BODIES but I didn’t care. I cradled Linda in my arms, her head resting on my chest where I’m sure she could hear the now steady thump of my heartbeat. I reflected on the attitude I’d had before this woman had crashed into my life. To say I’d been blindsided was an understatement. I’d had no interest in a relationship, preferring instead the odd one-night stand when I had an itch that needed to be scratched. I only ever fucked women who accepted it would be one night and nothing more. I’d been lucky, the women I’d been with never wanted any more from me and it had never been an issue leaving the hotel room once we were done. I had no idea whether they stayed the night after I left and didn’t really care, the room was paid for and I always made it clear they were welcome to stay.
I was single, passionate about my work and had no desire for marriage or children. Until, Linda. Now I wanted it all. I wanted her by my side as we helped those in the outback. I wanted to see her walk down the aisle, a huge smile on her face before I made her my wife. I wanted to see her with a rounded belly, carrying our child.
What the fuck had happened to me? I’d known her for less than two weeks and I was planning a complete future with her.
I brushed my hand lightly over her hair and kissed the top of her head as she slept. I was dreading letting her go tomorrow but being apart would help me sort out my feelings and put perspective on the whole situation.
Linda gazed up at me through sex rumpled hair and smiled. My heart ticked up.
“Stop thinking so hard, Drew.”
Fuck, could this woman read my mind? “Did I wake you?”
“No, I was laying here thinking too.”
“About what?”
“What’s happening to us.” Linda pulled herself into a sitting position and I felt the loss of her warmth immediately. “Drew, I’m scared. Everything is happening so fast. I promised myself after Blane that I’d take time out for myself. I can’t understand this attraction I have for you.”
I gathered her hands in mine. “Sweetheart, I know what you’re saying, but I have no answers for you. I’m just as confused. Two weeks ago, before I met you, I had my life mapped out as a single man. Now, I can’t see a future without you in it.”
“Does it scare you?”
“A little, but it feels right.”
Linda nodded before pushing forward onto her knees, wrapping her arms around me and settling her lips over mine for a sensuous kiss. My flaccid cock stood up with interest. Again. It seemed I couldn’t get enough of this woman. When she pulled back, I glanced at the clock on the side table.
“It’s almost six, do you want to go out for dinner?”
“This hotel has twenty-four-hour room service, I can think of much better things to be doing instead of going out in the cold.”
I couldn’t disagree with my lovely lady so I eased her onto her back, rose over her and kissed her senseless before once again, worshipping her body and fucking her until she didn’t know her own name.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
“Drew, do you think there could be a position at the hospital in Bourke for me?”
I spun around from where I’d been combing my hair in the bathroom mirror after sharing a shower with Linda. I was shocked at the question.
“Bourke Hospital? I don’t understand, you said RFDS was your life.”
She moved closer and slid her arms around my waist before gazing up at me.
“It is. Was. I want to be with you when you leave Sydney and go to live up there.”
