He took off at a run and returned a few minutes later with her cellphone clutched delicately in his mouth. He dropped it into her outstretched palm.

“Thank you.” She wiped off the slobber and called Val.

“Why are you FaceTiming me? You know I hate this shit.”

“You didn’t have to accept the video part of the call Your Freaking Majesty. And I did it because I need to know if you’ve ever seen this before.” Meredith flipped the camera so it showed the sword.

Valkyrie’s sharp inhale was all the confirmation Meredith needed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Someone shoved it into my wards.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know. They didn’t stick around to chat.” Please don’t ask why, please don’t ask why, please don’t ask—

“I’ll delay asking why until I’m there. Get it inside and whatever you do, don’t touch it with your bare hands.”

“It’s not my first time, Val.” The call ended. She sighed and looked at Monster. “You do phones, I don’t suppose you do blankets too?”

Monster did, in fact, do blankets. A few minutes later she wrapped the sword up, placed it carefully between the handlebars of the dirt bike, and drove back to the house.
