The titles fell away more quietly than Renji expected. Nothing beneath them felt smaller. Haruki without the Family remained a man who noticed every vulnerable person in a room. Renji without his bloodline remained a man who had spent centuries healing because survival alone was not enough. Their roles had not been false. Only incomplete.

Renji leaned closer. Haruki looked at his mouth.

"You are injured," Renji said.

"So are you."

"The wound in my side is superficial."

"My lips are unharmed."

"That is medically irrelevant."

"Good."

Renji kissed him. Carefully. No urgency. Haruki's hand moved behind his neck and held him there with what little strength he had. The kiss tasted faintly of medication and blood. Alive.

Renji had kissed him before — in hidden rooms, in pauses between investigations, with desire negotiated around caution. This was different. Not because it was deeper. Because nothing waited behind it unsaid.

When Renji drew back, Haruki's eyes remained closed. His forehead rested against Renji's. The monitor had accelerated. Renji glanced towards it. Haruki opened one eye.

"Do not diagnose the kiss."

"Your pulse is elevated."

"It has been a difficult evening."

"It is morning."

"The curtains are closed."

"That does not alter time."

Haruki's fingers remained at the back of his neck.

"Stay."

Renji looked at him.

"I am not leaving."

"No. Stay here."

Haruki shifted carefully towards the far side of the bed. The movement cost him. Renji stopped him before he pulled the drain.

"There is insufficient space."

"There is enough."

"You need unrestricted access for medical staff."

"They can work around you."

"I do not sleep."

"You lie down convincingly."

"Haruki."
