The first touch of their mouths was almost too gentle to be called a kiss. Warmth. Breath. The faint taste of coffee from hours earlier. Haruki did not pull him closer. He remained still, allowing Renji to choose every part of the moment. That restraint lasted only until Renji kissed him again. Then Haruki's hand slid from Renji's cheek into his hair. His other hand settled carefully at Renji's waist.

The kiss deepened without urgency. No desperation. No attempt to consume what had been delayed. It was quiet. Certain. An answer rather than a question.

Renji had kissed people before. That knowledge felt distant, belonging to other centuries, other versions of himself. He remembered affection, desire, the comfort of bodies shared in darkness. He did not remember ever feeling so entirely present.

Haruki's thumb moved at the base of his skull. Renji's fingers curled into the front of Haruki's coat. The rain continued beyond the walkway. The university remained empty around them. No interruption came. No phone rang. No threat emerged from the dark. For once, the world allowed the moment to remain exactly what it was.

Haruki's mouth softened against his. Renji felt the beginning of a smile between them. He drew back only enough to breathe. Haruki followed before stopping himself. Their foreheads touched. Neither spoke. Renji's eyes remained closed. He could still feel the kiss through his entire body. Not dramatic. Not overwhelming. More dangerous than either. It felt natural, as though he had been moving towards it for weeks without admitting the direction.

Haruki's breath touched his mouth.

"I've thought about doing that," he said.

Renji opened his eyes.

"For how long?"

Haruki considered.

"The hospital."

"That early?"

"You were very commanding."

"I was preventing you from reopening a wound."

"You threatened to sedate me."

"You required rest."

"I found it compelling."

Renji stared at him. Haruki smiled.

"You're judging me."

"Yes."

"Did you think about it?"

Renji should have lied. He no longer wanted to.

"Yes."

Haruki's eyebrows lifted.

"When?"

"The café."

"Which café?"

"The first one."

"You disliked me."

"I found you irritating."
