"But while you're here, she's not getting worse. She's not losing any more of her memories. She's not losing you. She's still your mom."

Her breath trembled as she looked up at him, her vision blurred with tears."Maybe...maybe staying here means she stays alive."

"Maybe," he whispered back."I love you, Jillian. And I'm not letting you face any of this alone."

Chapter 33

Moe

––––––––

Copper strode up tothe house with his fists balled at his sides.Moe let the curtain fall back into place.

He turned to Jillian."Stay close."

Copper was the least of their threats in Everstill, but Moe wasn't taking any chances.

She nodded, walking toward him.He stepped to the door and yanked it open, finding Copper soaked in sweat and panic.Moe's stomach hardened at the uncertainty in Copper's eyes.

"It's starting," Copper said.

Moe looked past him.A low rumble rolled across the sky, deep and unnatural. His skin prickled. The air was thick and charged with electricity.Soon the darkness would come.

Jillian pressed against his back.He glanced over his shoulder, and his heart twisted. She was the woman he loved, and he could lose her.

"Is this it?Can we go back home?"she asked.

Wind slammed against the house, rattling the windows hard enough to make the glass tremble. The adrenaline surge hit him hard.

"Yeah.It's time to go."

She grabbed his arm, her fingers trembling."Whatever you do, don't leave me."

He pulled her close, his hands gripping her shoulders."Never."
