I glanced toward the apartment she’d just walked out of before looking back at her.

“Wait, you live across the hall?”

A small smile touched her lips.

“I guess I do.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What are the odds?”

She shrugged.

“I don’t know. I haven’t done the math.”

That made me laugh a little harder. Using the keys she’d just rescued, I unlocked my apartment and pushed the door open before dragging the box inside. After setting it just past the doorway, I turned back around. She was still standing there with one hand resting on her doorknob. The hallway had gone quiet, and we were just staring at one another.

“Thanks, neighbor,” I said with a smile.

She reached up and absentmindedly pushed her glasses back into place.

“You’re welcome.”

With that, she stepped inside her apartment and closed the door behind her. A second later, I heard a lock turn. Then another and then another. I chuckled to myself as I closed my own door. Something told me that my neighbor wasn’t the trusting type.

GHOST

I sat two houses down with the engine off. For hours, I had been watching Reemo’s place through the windshield. It had taken me three days to figure out where the nigga stayed. Three days I followed him from a distance. Three days of hoping that he didn’t realize I was tailing him. I was nervous thinking that one of those days he was leading me into a trap, but he didn’t. Every night after he would do his runarounds, he would always return to this spot. This was his home. It had to be.

It was a small one-story house tucked away at the end of a quiet street. I watched Reemo step out onto the porch with a cigarette before disappearing back inside. He had to be inside by himself, but then I wondered if he wasn’t. If there were other people inside, then I needed somebody else with me. I reached for my phone and hit Tahari’s name. The screen rang twice before he answered. The first thing I noticed was the smile on his face. The second… was Maliah. She was curled up against his side on the couch, her head rested on his shoulder while some movie played in the background. He looked happier than I’d seen him in years.

“Told you she had you whipped,” I muttered.

“Man, what you want?” Trigga said as he laughed.

“I found him.”

“Who?” his smile disappeared.

“Reemo.”

He sat up a little straighter.

“You serious?”

“Dead serious.”

I flipped the camera around long enough to show him the house before turning it back toward myself.

“I know where he stays.”

His eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing over there?”

“What does it look like? I’m about to handle this.”

Tahari looked over at Maliah.
