I couldn’t explain why I kept looking at her. Maybe it was because she was pretty. Or maybe it was because she looked at me exactly one time before deciding whatever was on that computer was more important. Either way, I wasn’t used to being ignored.

“Penelope.”

One of the women working behind the front desk looked over at her.

“Would you mind helping me with this application? I have to finish this financial aid packet.”

“Sure.”

She closed the laptop that was sitting in front of her before standing. Up close, I noticed that she was about my age. Maybe a little older. She had light brown skin, freckles sprinkled across her cheeks, round glasses were sitting on her nose, and a littlegap between her front teeth that somehow fit her perfectly. She carried a tablet over to one of the desks and smiled politely.

“Whenever you’re ready.”

Pops and I took the seats across from her. She tapped a few things on the screen before extending her hand.

“I’ll need your ID.”

I handed it over.

“Thank you.”

Her eyes moved back and forth between my license and the information she was entering. Every few seconds she’d ask another question. Her tone was professional, almost like she’d done it a hundred times.

“So…”

I leaned back in my chair.

“You work here?”

She shook her head without looking up.

“No.”

“It looks like you do,” I said as I waved my hand at the task she was doing.

“I’m a student,” she clarified.

That finally got my attention.

“You are?”

She nodded.

“I volunteer around the office when they need extra help. It keeps me busy between classes.”

One of the advisers passed by and smiled.

“We appreciate it too.”

Penelope laughed softly.

“I know. That’s why I keep coming back.”

The woman disappeared into another office, leaving the three of us alone again.

“What are you studying?” I asked.

This time she actually looked at me.
