Looking down at the boy, he then looked up to follow his small hand as Jake pointed.
“No way,” Frost whispered as he headed forward to the only place that sound could have come from.Although how this could be was a huge mystery. After they made their way across the huge lot, Frost grabbed his phone. He turned the light on then climbed up to the side of the large dumpster and slowly swept the interior. He paused the light when he saw a bundle of what looked like dirty clothing against the metal sidewall. He jumped in, grateful that it was mostly empty, not that it smelled so great.
He stepped closer and realized it was a body dressed in dirty clothes. For the first time in the last five minutes, he hesitated.“Damn, don’t let this be a dead body.”He knelt down beside the bundle and gently turned it over. Now he gasped.
It was a woman, a badly beaten woman. With long dark hair. Her eyes were black and blue. Her left eye was swollen shut and she had dried blood that had dripped down from the corner of her mouth to her chin.
“Hey girl, are you okay?”he asked her quietly.
The woman opened her good eye as far as she could and replied, “Do I look ok, buddy?Hell no, I’m not alright.”
Jake had climbed up and he peeked in.His eyes widened when he saw her.“Gee lady, you are wrecked.Who did this to you?”he asked innocently.
She turned her head and studied him for a moment then she closed her eyes and sighed hard.“Don’t worry about it kid, as soon as I can move I’m out of this town for good.I’m leaving and I’m going somewhere they will never find me again.I just have to stay out of sight until I can heal.”
Frost tucked his phone into his jacket pocket.“Well girl, you ain’t gonna heal in this dumpster.”He scooped her up into his arms.
She cried out in pain.
He hugged her to him and hushed her.“Look, I know you’re hurting but you have to keep quiet while we get you somewhere safe.If whoever beat on you figures out where you are they might come back to finish the job.”Then he looked over at Jake and said, “Grab my phone and get a hold of Storm. He can come get us.”He moved close to where Jake sat on the edge of the dumpster top.
Jake reached for the phone in Frost’s pocket and used the screen to tap Storm’s number. Then he put the phone to Frost’s ear.
“Brother, do you know what time it is?”Storm growled from the cell speaker.
“Yeah, I know what time it is, you need to come get us.”
“Us?”Storm inquired.
“Yeah, me and Jake and somebody that needs help.”
“Jake?”Storm grumbled.“That kid went out again? He should still be in bed.”
“Well, he ain’t in bed, he was down by the docks again.I followed him to make sure he was okay and we found somebody hurt real bad. She’s gonna need a doctor.”
The girl in his arms opened her eyes and pleaded, “No, no doctor!I can’t go to the hospital. They’ll find me for sure.Just leave me here.”Panic trembled in her voice and something almost like terror showed on her face as she attempted to struggle.
Frost had to tighten his hold on her.
She began to cry then she passed out and went limp in his arms.
Frost almost dropped her.“Brother, get here now.We are in a damn dumpster in the lot by Carson Beach.”He growled into the phone.
“A dumpster?”Storm exclaimed.
“Yeah man, just come get us.I’m gonna need help getting her out of the bin.”He ended the call.
Jake stared at the woman then at Frost.“Is she gonna be okay?”
Frost looked down at the woman and said, “I hope so kid.”Then he brushed her hair away from her face.He studied her bruises for a moment then he looked further down at her dirty hands. He saw the defense marks...scrapes on her knuckles and he knew she had fought back but whoever had beaten her had won their fight. He growled under his breath as he saw her torn skin and broken nails.
Frost was a strong man so he knew he could hold her for a while. He realized she had been on the dumpster floor, but he just couldn’t force himself to set her down on it again. It made no sense but he figured this was the least he could do for her.
