Hewantedthe Stone Moonwolves, and he for damn sure wanted to kill Adam Thorne for what he’d done tome. But he would do neither of those things, because he was a good fucking man,and he wanted me to have what I deserved.

And I deserved to kill Adam.

I’d been planning since I was akid how I would someday destroy the man who’d killed my father, forced out mymother, and hobbled my wolf. When I’d finally had the chance, I’d been unableto do it.

But now, I would not hesitate.

When the time came, Adam Thornewould die.

“Stay with me tonight,” Jaredsaid.

“Why?” I teased. “You miss me?”

“Every second,” he saidseriously, “that I’m not with you.” He hesitated, then, “You’re part of me,Kait.”

My stomach tightened and mybrain froze and my tongue felt suddenly too large for my mouth, and I couldn’tthink of a single thing to say. Except, finally, “Dammit, Jared.” Then I endedthe call.

And I was pretty sure he’d besmiling as he slid his phone back into his pocket.

But I couldn’t think aboutmushy love shit. I was the big bad wolf who was about to kill a man who’d onlyever done bad things to me and mine, and I needed my game face on. I needed myinner psycho.

I realized I’d forgotten totell Jared the specifics of the job the council had given me, but I’d tell himin person when I saw him later that night.

“Daywalkers,” I whispered, shuddering. I remembered the daywalkers who’d attempted to enter Shadowfield. They’d been weak, their magic unformed, but that had been the beginning. I’dbelieved that was the last of them. Apparently, I’d been wrong.

“Ms. Silver?” the driver asked.“Did you say something?”

“No,” I said. “Just talking tomyself.” The elder had told me to gather a team and go after the daywalkers, and I wished abruptly and surprisingly that Remy Simon had remained inJakeston. I could have used his help, asshole though he might have been, andhe’d have loved hunting daywalkers.

I’d reluctantly agreed to meetthe wolf elder once a week for training sessions. Maybe he could help me yankout the power inside me. I couldn’t believe he’d fail. At the end of it, I wascertain I’d be a stronger person…if he didn’t kill me.

But not right now. Our sessionscould begin once I’d cleared some time in my schedule.

I returned Joe’s dozen or sotexts, assuring him I was fine and on my way back home.

He returned the textimmediately.I’m at Max’s place. I’ll be at your house in twenty minutes.

I’m staying at Jared’s housetonight.

Then I’ll meet you atShadowfield.

You know I’ll be fine there.Stay with Max.

He hasn’t exactly invited meto.

I sighed.Okay, Joe. Bringhim if he will come.

I’ll let him know you offered.

I hesitated.Tell him I misshim.

Next, I called Lucy. “Pack abag and have Ash ready. We’re staying at Shadowfield tonight.”

“Are you okay, Kait?” sheasked, immediately worried.

“I’m good. We just need to bewith the pack tonight.” I didn’t want to tell her that I was going to sneak outof Shadowfield before dawn and go after the Stone Moon alpha. Knowing Lucy, shewas already aware, and if she wasn’t, she’d only worry.

“I’ll pack your overnight bagas well,” she said. “I’ve been packing for the move to our new house. I lookforward to being in Huntersburg. Ash will just blossom there.” She chatteredon, rushing through her packing, content enough with my occasional grunts.
