“My pack cannot be protectedwithout me.”

I frowned. “Any decent alphacould protect the pack. If you were gone, another would step in.” Then I shookmy head and gestured impatiently. “Are you saying you were shown that my wolfwould kill you and leave the pack without an alpha?”

He said nothing and I could seethe truth in his eyes. “Fuck,” I whispered. “You hobbled me because your seertold you that I would destroy you someday. Is that right?”

“Not only me,” he said, hisvoice low and dark and full of utter conviction, “but my pack. And I cannotallow that to happen.”

“I can’t believe this,” Iwhispered, sick to my stomach. “You’ve hobbled me all these years because ofsomething you thought I might do in the future.”

“Kait is not evil, Adam,” mymother said, speaking finally. “You know that.”

“It doesn’t matter,” hemurmured. He didn’t take his stare from mine. “Evil or not, she will attempt toget her revenge. And I will reclaim her and keep her hobbled, or I will killher. Those are the only choices.”

“There are other choices,”someone said, someone even more familiar to me than my own ex-alpha. Someonedangerous.“Iwill claim her.”

I gasped and spun around, already reaching for my demon blade though I had no intention of using itagainst him. There was just that much threat, danger, and darkness in hisvoice. “Alpha,” I whispered.

Somehow he’d followed me, hadfound me, and all fucking hell was about to break loose. And with me caughtbetween them, the two alphas shifted and began to fight for my wolf.

For me.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

In a matter of seconds, theclearing went from quiet and still to full of shifted wolves and growls, snarls, and blood. I knew my strengths and fighting as a human in the midst oftwo warring groups of wolves was definitely not one of my strengths.

Despite what Adam Thornebelieved, I was not stupid.

My mother raced to me, fightingher shift to save her daughter. When she grabbed my arm, I was reminded of herenormous strength. Wolves were physically strong. I was half as strong as her,but once my wolf was free, I’d be bursting with power.

Right now, though, I needed to findshelter and get the hell out of the vicious battle. My mother dragged me alongwith her, and the last thing I saw before the trees closed around me was thehuge, gray wolf rushing the equally huge, white wolf.

Gray Shadow fighting StoneMoon.

It wasn’t like it hadn’thappened before, and it would happen again—if one of them didn’t kill theother.

Stone Moon warriors rushedfrom the shadows to collide with Gray Shadow warriors, and I knew that thoughJared’s wolves wouldn’t fight for me, they would fight to the death for theiralpha.

“Where are we going?” I askedmy mother, since she was taking us in the opposite direction of the house. Wewere going deeper into the woods, but I didn’t resist. I figured she knew whatshe was doing in her own woods.

“He’ll send Frick and Frackafter us,” she muttered, “but I’m prepared.”

“Frick and Frack?” I glancebehind us as we ran on, but I didn’t see anyone. They were coming, though.

“Dumb and Dumber,” she said, asthough that cleared anything up. “They’ll be coming for us.”

“What are you—oh. Edgar andGreg. Mom, are you okay? They didn’t hurt you?”

“No, no. I didn’t fight them.”She darted her head one way and then the other, then tightened her grip. “Thisway. Hurry.”

“What’s out here,” I asked.“Did you build an underground bunker? A secret treehouse?”

“Of course not,” she snapped.“That would injure the tree. I’ve stashed a getaway car.”

“Would it happen to be inthiscounty?”

“There.” She pointed, ignoringmy smartassery. “You run, I’ll hold them off.”

“Hold them off? Mom, I can’tshift, but I can fight.” I pulled my blade. “You’re coming or I’m not going.”
