Only, it wasn’t coming from Ryan, but from further away.

She stilled, adrenaline making her senses acute. There it was again. A voice. A voice that wasn’t Ryan’s.

She jerked, sitting up and grabbing his hand to still him. “Did you hear that?”

“I heard and loved all of it.” Ryan leaned in, nuzzling her cheek and neck.

“No, not that. The voice.” Sarah grabbed two handfuls of his hair and raised his head. “I hear voices.”

“Stats, I’m in the middle of something here. Let go of the hair.”

“I’m serious. Listen.”

“Baby, if you’ve changed your mind, that’s fine, just tell me. I mean, I’ll be in agony, but I can wait.”

“Will you shut up and listen? I hear people talking.”

“Other people?” He asked, proving once and for all that men really did switch off their brains during sex. “Not us?”

“No! Listen.”

Their sense of hearing more acute in the darkness, they listened.

And heard murmuring.

Ryan stiffened and Sarah released his hair. They froze, listening.

There it was again.

“Talk about crappy timing.” Ryan was on his feet in an instant. Light from his phone came on straight after but quickly dimmed as the battery died. “Where’s the iPad?” he said, before finding it and switching it on.

Sarah blinked against the sudden brighter light, noticing that Ryan had already pulled on his jeans and was working on his shoes.

“Get dressed, Stats, but keep it quiet. I need to find where the noise is coming from.”

She grabbed her bra and did that fasten at the front then swivel it to the back routine to get it on. Meanwhile, Ryan took the iPad and went searching for the source of the voices.

Sarah kept her eyes on him as he headed straight for the far wall.

“Hello?” Ryan called. “We need help.”

Dressed, Sarah tossed their belongings into her handbag before hurrying over to his side.

The voices were louder now but still too far away to make out words.

“Hello,” Ryan shouted. “We’re trapped and need help.”

There was a moment of silence before someone shouted back. “Hello?”

Sarah’s knees went weak, and she slid to a crouch beside Ryan.

“There!” He pointed to a hole, high up in the corner of the room. “It’s coming from there.”

“We’re stuck in an old mushroom farm,” Ryan called to the stranger. “Is there a way out from your end?”

“But of course.” A very dim light appeared through the hole, probably from their flashlight. “You must come through this tunnel. Can you see it?”

“Yes. Please, stay there. We need help finding our way out of here,” Ryan said.
