For the first time in her life, she experienced true freedom.

And it was glorious.

The water that’d felt so menacing became a soft cocoon.

A cradle.

A haven.

A place of safety, where she could rest and just be.

So, Sarah smiled, this is death…

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Benson Security

London

* * *

Megan was feeling antsy. She didn’t want to be in another meeting. She wanted to be out there, pummeling bad guys for information. The problem was, they didn’t have any bad guys to pummel—at least not until David and Harvard tracked their one down and brought him back to base. She hated waiting. She wished the boys had let her tag along with them while they hunted down a lead in East London, but they said she’d attract too much male attention.

Megan knew they were more worried she’d shoot the idiot before they had a chance to question him.

Sometimes, this security specialist gig wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. It was still better than hairdressing though, and she did get to work with her sexy husband. There just really needed to be a little less talking and a whole lot more action.

Dimitri elbowed her and leaned in to whisper. “Pay attention. There’s probably going to be a quiz after.”

If only that was funny.

“We boring you two?” Callum snapped at them.

Dimitri clamped a hand over her mouth before she could tell her boss the truth. Traitor.

“We’re good,” Dimitri said. “We’re all about the focus, aren’t we, Buffy?” He grinned at her.

Megan bit his hand, making him wince.

While Callum glared at them, Elle tapped her laptop and a picture of a woman appeared on the conference room screen. She was pretty, a bit uptight looking but pleasantly plump—as her mother would say. She looked…ordinary.

“Sarah Jean Davidson,” Elle said. “Twenty-seven. An actuary with Steele-Shepherd insurance. In the month before he was shot, Ryan sent her hundreds of messages and called her several times. As far as I can tell, they only met in person once—the weekend before Joe blew up the office.”

“Hey,” Joe drawled. “The explosives were Callum’s idea. And it was your brother’s fault we had to trigger them.”

Megan grinned. The explosives were great. They should blow things up more often.

“I don’t understand.” Julia looked confused. “Were Ryan and Sarah pen pals?”

Oh boy. Megan loved Julia, but she lived in a different world from, well, everyone else. There was naive, then there was Julia. It was good she had Joe to stand in front of her, otherwise the world would have chewed her up years ago.

“Kinda,” Elle said, flashing Julia a sweet smile. “They met on Tinder and were getting to know each other before they—”

“Got to know each other.” Megan finished by wiggling her eyebrows.

“Oh. Of course.” Julia started blushing, and Megan sighed.

Next girls’ night, they’d have to explain modern dating to Julia—again. At least there would be wine.
