Megan elbowed her aside. “This is an investigation. We have to read these. The fact that it’s also a chance to snoop on Ryan’s love life is neither here nor there.” She paused. “Never understood that saying. Where are they talking about? And why does it matter?”

“Focus.” Elle pushed Megan out of the way.

“Look, these messages are obviously important.” Megan tried to appear innocent when she was barely containing her glee at poking around in Ryan’s private life. “We would be negligent if we didn’t find out why.”

“I wouldn’t like someone reading my messages to David.” Elle didn’t add that there was a good chance her former spy of a husband would eliminate anyone who dared.

Megan shrugged. “Wouldn’t bother me,” said the exhibitionist.

“Quelle surprise,” Elle drawled.

Everyone in the office knew everything about Megan’s love life with Dimitri. It would actually have been a relief if she kept some things a secret. Or at least stopped leaving doors open when she pounced on her husband. There had been times when Elle had wanted to rinse her eyeballs with bleach after passing one of the offices.

“You had no problem snooping with the cameras we’d set up that caught Callum having sex,” Megan protested.

“That’s different. Callum was suicidal. And…”

“It was hot?”

“I’m not going to answer that on the grounds it may incriminate me.”

“Whatever. Have all of his messages been hacked or just Tinder?” Megan asked.

“Good question.” Elle did her thing and grimaced. “Everything’s been hacked, and all around the same time too. As far as I can see, whoever did this was following every mention of Sarah.”

“Maybe this Sarah had people looking out for her?”

“Or a stalker who didn’t want her near anyone else.”

“We need to find out who she is. Bring up her Tinder profile.”

Elle tapped in the command. “It’s been deleted.”

“Does Ryan mention her full name anywhere?”

“Not that I can see.”

“Okay, what about her phone number? Is that there somewhere? We could just call it and ask her who the hell she is and what she’s done with Ryan.” Megan had that glint in her eye she usually got just before she turned violent. It wasn’t a good sign.

“He texted her, so there’s a number.” Elle rattled it off. “Give it a ring.”

Megan already had her phone in her hand. She put it on speaker. “This is Sarah, please leave a message after the tone. If this is a business matter, please call my work number.” She proceeded to give it.

As soon as the message was finished, Megan was dialing the work number. “Good afternoon, this is Steele-Shepherd Insurance. How may I direct your call?”

“This is Benson Security. We’re hoping to connect with a woman called Sarah. It’s a matter of urgency,” Megan said. “I’m afraid we don’t have a last name. Do you have any Sarahs in the building?”

There was a pause. “Could you tell me what this is about, please?”

Megan shot a questioning look at Elle, who held up her hands to say she didn’t know if it was okay to tell her or not.

“One of our colleagues is missing,” Megan said. “We found Sarah’s number in his phone and we’re hoping she has some information that could help us locate our friend.”

“Oh dear.” The voice sounded suddenly anxious. “Please hold, and I’ll get someone to speak with you.”

Tinny elevator music filled Elle’s office as she frowned at Megan. “I don’t like the sound of that.”

“Neither do I.”
