My eyes immediately meet his, putting me into a sleep-like trance. It must be obvious how fast my heart is beating because my chest is heaving a lot.
His Adam’s apple bobs up and down, and his grip on me is secure.
“Let’s go upstairs,” I suggest.
“What?”
“Sorry, you don’t have to come upstairs with me. I meant…I don’t know what I meant. What am I saying?”
He licks his lips, grinning up a storm. “I can walk you to your door.”
“That’s what I meant!”
Am I sweating bullets yet?
I speed-walk up the stairs with him slowly trailing behind me. Once we make it to my apartment, he opens his mouth. “Thank you for coming with me to see my mom today.”
“Thank you for bringing me with you.”
“I told you it would go well. My mom has always been your cheerleader.”
“There’s nobody else I’d rather have as my cheerleader than Dana.”
“You can have more than one cheerleader, you know.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Good to know.” He boxes me in against the wall next to the front door, reaching for my hand. Planting a delicate kiss on the top of my hand, he smiles at me. “Good night, Vi.”
“Good night, Gray.”
What the hell just happened?
Knocking on the door, it swings open.
I see Sage in the doorway. “I thought you’d never come back.”
“Haha, you’re hilarious.” I place my purse down on the kitchen table, hanging my set of keys on the key holder close to the door.
“I know you’re dying to talk to someone about everything that happened today.”
“I am, but I know you hate hearing about that stuff, so I’m going to say good night. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Heading into my bedroom, I grab a set of pajamas to change into. I complete my daily night routine in my bathroom afterwards.
Sage is right about me wanting to desperately talk to someone about what happened today. And I know exactly who I want to talk to about it.
I sit down on my bed, getting comfortable underneath thecovers. Pulling up the FaceTime app, I tap on Dani’s name, and the phone rings for a bit until I see her face.
“Well, this is a surprise,” she says.
I can only see the top half of her body because that’s what’s showing in the frame. Her dark brunette hair is up in a high ponytail, and she’s wearing a tank top with a cartoon character on it. “Is it okay that I FaceTimed you?”
“Yeah, of course it is. How did it go today?”
“It was so nice to see Dana after all these years. She’s moving into Noah’s house with his mom. I know Grayson was taken aback by it at first, but I think he’s okay now.”
