After she left, taking her purse with her, she sat there in the bed and felt good about being able to say those things to her sister for once, for about ten seconds. Then she decided that she shouldn’t have opened her mouth, no matter how much she’d been feeling that way about her sister.

Crying now, she felt bad for talking to her sister and telling her the things that she’d been thinking for years now. That her sister wasn’t as depressed as she made out to be, nor did she have to be seen five days a week for it.The doctor was probably sick of her whining all the time. She knew that she would be.

Blake had a pity party for herself while waiting for the nurse to come in and talk to her.Blake had been cruel and rude to Robin, and she knew it.She had been feeling like this had been coming on for some time now, and it was her getting hurt by her sister that had brought it all to a head.Instead of the nurse coming in, it was Doctor Dresden. And he was upset that she’d been crying.

“You can have something for pain if you want it.There is no reason for you to suffer through pain when you don’t have to.”She said that she barely noticed the pain at all.“Then what has you upset?Your sister wasn’t here, was she?I think there is something wrong with her.She didn’t want anything to do with you when the ambulance was called. In fact, she wanted us to just take you home so that you could put a bandage on your wound. It had to have thirty-one stitches.”

“She didn’t know how many it took.Only said that it depressed her when I was hurt. But then we got into this big fight, and she left.”She looked at the doctor and realized just how handsome he really was.“When am I all right to go home?I do have to get back to work, too.”

“You can leave in the morning.I’d like for you to stay one more night to make sure that there is no more swelling at the sight.”She nodded and realized that her head was hurting, but that could have been from fighting with Robin.“How about a half dose of what we’ve been giving you? It’ll take the edge off of the pain that you’re in, and you won’t have to sit there and suffer.”

“All right. It’s really just because I had a fight with Robin.”He stepped out of the room and spoke to someone on the other side before coming back in.“You didn’t have to do that.I would have called her.”

“It’s my job to make sure you’re all right.”He sat down in the chair that Robin had been sitting in.“I started to have your table and chairs cleaned, but my mom suggested that it might be part of your thrill of finding it to do it on your own.Was she right?”

“Yes.I would have been happy for it, but disappointed as well. It’s not that bad, but I was thinking that I could clean it up on my own for my first piece of furniture that I’ve gotten myself. My place is furnished and has been since I moved in.”He told her how he’d just bought himself a house and was in the process of filling it.“That must be daunting. An entire house to fill would make menuts.”

“I have a lot of it done.Mostly online shopping. But two of my brothers have a house, too, and I’ve been taking my cues from them. They have the most incredible couch that just folds around you when you sit in it.Like it’s just waiting for you to go to sleep.”He laughed, and she could feel it all the way to her toes.He had such a good laugh.“The master is the only one that I took my time with.I’m hoping someday to find myself a wife, and she’ll want to have children with me.”

They talked about housing while the drugs took effect on her body and head. She was dozing off and on while he spoke, and she thought that he was doing that on purpose.Just as she was ready to snuggle down into the light blanket that was on her bed, she heard him laugh again and say that he had to talk to her.But it could wait. She would love to talk to him sometime, but right now, she needed this nap more than anything.

Reagan wanted to pull Blake into his arms and hold her.He only just realized last night that she was his mate.Coming home from the hospital, he’d felt better than he had in a while, and he could change his clothing with just a thought. That was something that his brothers told him had happened to them when they first found their mates. He’d actually been afraid that it was Robin who was his mate, as he’d been the closest to her all evening. But today, when he’d been in her room, it confirmed that it was Blake and not her sister.

That might not have worked out very well if she’d been his mate.Robin was lovely and everything, if not a little older than he thought he’d have as a mate. She had to be in her early forties, and he was still in his mid to late twenties. Not a huge difference, but he didn’t like her all that much and didn’t figure that the fates would be that cruel to him.Watching Blake sleep, he thought of all the things that he had to tell her.

He knew that she did suffer from depression as well. When she was having a black day, something that her boss had told him was that when she was really having a bad day, she’d be home from work at that time and they’d all worry about her. He’d found that out before he’d realized that she was his mate, and he figured that he’d just say he needed to know everything about her because of her wound being a head injury.

When the nurse came in to check on her, he decided that he’d been sitting here long enough. He really did have things to do, and he could see his patients here at the hospital while he was waiting to speak to Blake.Getting up, he was nearly out of the room when she spoke to him in a slightly slurred voice.

“You have a wonderful laugh.”He thanked her.“And the most beautiful blue eyes that I’ve ever seen.Children from you would be heartbreakers.”

Laughing when she didn’t say anymore, he made his way to the nurses’ station to leave word that she could have medication when she wanted. He knew that her head was going to be hurting for a while, and he thought there was no reason for her to suffer needlessly.

Most of his afternoon was taken up by seeing his three patients. He was a family doctor, so when one of his patients gave birth, he had to make sure that the child was all right.Examining the child before she was released, he thought about what Blake had said about his children, and he had to stop moving when an image of her heavy with his child entered his head. She was beautiful to say the least, and he couldn’t wait for that to happen to them as a family. But he’d better talk to her first. She might not want children, and he would be all right with that as well.It was her body and her timeline as to whether they had children together or not.

Going home to grab some lunch, he was having leftovers again when his house phone rang.He only used it for the service when he was home and was surprised when she called. He hadn’t turned it on because his office was open today.Answering it, he waited for the person on the other end to speak before he was ready to hang up.Then she asked who he was.

“Who is this?”She said that she didn’t work that way and wanted his name first.“I’m not going to play games with you.I don’t know how you got this number, but this is a private home number, andyou’re not to call it again.”

“My name is Robin Winters. You’re treating my sister.”He didn’t say anything because she hadn’t asked him a question.“Well? When are you going to release her from your care? She doesn’t need someone like you as her doctor. You’re more of a country doctor and wouldn’t be good at treating her.She complains of depression, but I don’t believe that. She also says that she has a doctor therapist, too, but I’ve never seen him, so I don’t believe that she has one.You need to discharge her and leave her alone.”

“Because I consider myself to be a good person, I’m not going to tell you what I think of you.But I’ll continue to care for Blake until such time as she says that I’m not.If she has a family physician, then that’s great. But until I hear differently from her, I’m not going to do anything that you say.”She told him that she had money.“So do I.”

“You’ve no idea what sort of damage I can do to you if you don’t do as I say.”He said that he wasn’t going to tell her anything that he was going to be doing because she was his patient and not a child. She told him that she’d been taking care of her since their parents died.“I think she’s well over the age of needing a mother figure. In fact, I think you both are old enough to make decisions on your own.”

“Are you calling me old?”He asked her where she’d gotten that.“You did, didn’t you?Did you know that that’s a trigger for me?My age is none of your business. Now you’ve set off my depression again, and I’m going to have to have a lie down.See what you did?You know nothing about what I suffer through hourly. Why, I should report you for being a rude bastard to me.And I know people who will take my word as gospel.”

“Good for you.I have no idea why you’re bothering me at home when you should be going through a service.Don’t call here again, and if you want answers about your sister’s care, perhaps you should ask her.”He hung up the phone and then took it off the receiver to call the service.

“I didn’t patch anyone through, sir.I know that’s not the way you like to handle calls.”He said that she’d somehow gotten the number.“I didn’t give it to her.She didn’t come through this office either to get in touch with you.Perhaps it’s time to change your phone number, as you were commenting about last month.”

“I believe that I’ll do that now.I don’t want just random people to just call this number when it’s used for your office.”He would call right away and get it changed, then only give it out to the company that he worked with.Reagan wondered where she’d gotten the number and decided that he was going to be more careful in the future about how he gave the number out. Some of his work-related friends had it, and he wondered if one of them had given it to her.Well, no more.“If you get a call from her again, tell her that I’m not taking messages from her.”

“Yes, sir.Don’t forget to change your number and give it to the office. We don’t have your number, but only on the switchboard.”He told her that it was good.“Thank you, sir.I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

It took him nearly two hours to get his number changed, then changed again at the service he had been using since he’d been a doctor. He believed that his dad had the same service right now and was going to warn him to change his number, too.Not that it mattered, he supposed. His dad was going to be out of business in a few short weeks anyway and would have no more use for the service.
