CHAPTER14
The next morning, Jessica was up and showered by six a.m. She finger-combed her hair, then put on her robe and went to Lanie’s room. She knocked on the door, waited, and then knocked again.
The door slowly opened. Lanie had her robe on and her hair was still beautiful. It would be called ‘bedhead’ today and was very much in style.
“What?”
Jessica pushed her way inside. “I need a blow dryer. Did you bring yours?”
“No, I didn’t bring mine. I don’t need it. You could always let your hair go natural, and we’d be twins.” She laughed as she headed back to the bedroom. “Well, except for the fact I’m black and you’re not.”
“No one will pay any attention to that. Did mother give you the dress I told her to bring?”
Lanie rolled her eyes. “I can hear. Of course, I brought it.”
Jessica hugged her friend. “That peach color is so gorgeous on you and that dress is beautiful. We’ll be the best-dressed women at the doctor’s office and the courthouse.”
“Are you going to ask your mother for a hair dryer?”
She shook her head. “I’m taking your advice and wearing it au naturel.”
Lanie yawned and leaned against the doorjamb to the bedroom. “Good, now, can I go back to sleep?”
Jessica grinned, walked to her friend, and put her arms around her before giving her a big, noisy kiss on the cheek. “Yes, you can sleep for another hour and then you have to be up doing my makeup. I want it to be very special. After all, it’s my wedding day.”
She rolled her eyes and wiped her cheek with her palm. “Fine. Goodnight.”
Jessica shook her head and laughed. “Goodnight. See you in an hour.” She practically floated back to her room.
Two hours later, she was in her beautiful red dress and patent leather heels. Her makeup was perfect, and her hair was in loose curls down her back.
Roark stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking up.
The small smile that crossed his face was just for her. His eyes focused only on her.
She reached the last stair.
He held out his arm.
She took his arm and descended to stand beside him. Looking around the room, she saw nothing but smiling faces. “Are we ready to do this? The doctor’s office opened at eight.”
Roark patted her hand where it lay on his arm. “Don’t worry. It’ll all be good.”
Butterflies filled her stomach, and she felt nauseous. She knew better than to eat now. “I’m just nervous.”
He bent and whispered in her ear, “You look beautiful, but I can’t wait to take that dress off…and not turn my back, but to see you in all your glory.”
She laughed. “All right, folks, I’m ready. My dear, nearly husband has come to the rescue and kept me from vomiting from nerves.”
“Let’s get going. Are you all sure you want to go to the doctor with us? You can go to the courthouse and wait. We shouldn’t be long. The doctor’s office is just a couple of blocks from there.” Roark moved toward the door.
“I think that’s a good idea,” said Trevor.
Jessica saw everyone else give their nod of approval.
“Let’s go, then.” Roark headed out the door.
Jessica took his arm again once they were outside. She placed her right hand over her left as it circled the crook of his elbow.Am I making a mistake? Is a love like I’ve never known before enough to build a happy marriage?
