He looked up at his housekeeper and friend, more grateful than ever for her. “Thanks, Athena.”
She waved him off. “You’d do the same for me.”
“I would.”
She set a hand on his shoulder. “I know, and that’s why I’m still here after all these years. Jubal feels the same way.”
He covered her hand with his where it lay on his shoulder. “Thank you.”
“Of course.” She removed her hand. “Now, let’s get her bandage open and see what’s going on.”
When Athena got the bandages off, Roark looked at the wounds. They both were oozing small amounts of yellow discharge.
He turned his gaze toward Athena. “The doctor said if we see yellow discharge we are supposed to call her back and she will prescribe some antibiotics.”
“We better get some, then. The sooner she starts taking them, the sooner the infection will go away.”
“I’ll call her back. Would you clean the wound while I do? Then I’ll help you re-bandage her.”
An hour later, between him and Athena, they had cleaned her wound, changed Jessica’s bandage, redressed her and gotten her back into bed.
“I hate the fact that she’s gotten an infection. I’ll call the pharmacy and make sure they got the prescription for the antibiotics.”
“Good. I need to start dinner. Let me know if anything changes.”
“I will.”
Roark paid the pharmacist’s son to drive the prescription of antibiotics out to the ranch.
Just a couple of hours later, Jessica was awake and driving everyone crazy with her requests.
Finally, the next day, she told everyone she was sorry for yesterday and could get around the house by herself on just one crutch. He let her do so.
She walked down to the kitchen. “Hello, Athena. I want to apologize. I know I’m a terrible patient. Thank you for all you’ve done.”
Athena smiled. “Roark did most of it. He was the only one you’d listen to.”
“Oh, no wonder he doesn’t want to be around me anymore. Did he tell you he wants to marry me? I said yes.” Her stomach was upset and she couldn’t eat. “I wonder if he’ll take back his proposal?”
