Roark returned in a few minutes with two thick cable-knit sweaters. “You can put it over your head and keep your hair tucked in the neckline, so it doesn’t blow with the top down.”
“We’re traveling with the top down?” Her voice went up a bit more than she’d meant. She hadn’t figured on traveling with the top down. Joseph and Mandy had been in a convertible with the top down when they died. But she needed to remember that Joseph was a reckless driver, and that’s why they died, not because of the car.
His eyebrows furrowed just a little, and he blinked a couple of times. “Yes, why else get the convertible?”
She shrugged. “Right, why?”
“Are you all right?”
She nodded. “I’m fine.”
He frowned. “Are you sure? We don’t have to do this.”
“No, I want to see what you want to show me.” And she realized she really did, because it was important to him and he wanted her to see it.
He smiled and pointed at the sweater she held. “Pull on your sweater now.” He tugged the sweater over his head, mussing his perfect hair and making him look much more approachable.
She drew the garment over her head and did as he suggested and left her hair inside the sweater. The sleeves hung down almost to her knees. She chuckled.
“What’s funny?”
“I feel like a kid in her daddy’s sweater.”
He smiled and shook his head as he came close. “Here, let’s get these sleeves rolled up. I don’t think pushing them will be enough.”
She stretched out her arm. “Oh, I think it will. The sleeves have a good tight cuff. It will probably hold. If it doesn’t then we’ll roll them. So,” she looked up at him. “Where are we going?”
Roark looked her up and down. “Are you Cinderella and have to be home before midnight?”
Deadpan, she answered. “Yes, but I turn into a pumpkin.”
His eyes widened. “You’re so serious. I’m not sure whether to believe you or not.”
Suddenly, she burst out laughing. “You didn’t seriously believe me?”
“No, but for a second, I wondered.” Then he laughed. He came close and lifted her chin with a finger. “You’re so beautiful. I’ve been dying to do this since I first saw you. May I kiss you?”
Her stomach turned somersaults. “I thought you’d never ask. Please do.”
He lowered his head to her upraised face, angling and pressing his lips against hers.
The kiss was searing, and she felt it to her toes. Jessica tested his lips with her tongue and felt him smile as he opened enough for her to enter.
They tasted each other, circling, dueling, touching. Making love with their mouths.
Jessica pulled back, breathing hard, her pulse racing.
Roark lifted a thumb to her bottom lip and smoothed it over.
Her lips felt swollen from the most powerful kiss she’d ever had. “Wow!”
He smoothed his right knuckles over her jaw and then cupped it for just a moment.
She thought he was about to kiss her again.
Instead, he lowered his right hand to her waist. “Yes, wow, is a good way to describe a kiss like that. Shall we go before I figure a way to get you out of those clothes and into my bed?”
She lifted her chin as heat rose to points in her cheeks and she knew she blushed…because she could picture them in bed together. “I’m not that kind of girl, Roark. You should know that up front.”
