“Which makes your betrayal that much worse,” I snarled back. “Why do you do it? Why did you ruin that other one? Do you hate witches that much?”
“He asked us to step in. I told you that. I wasn’t lying when I said he came to us and asked us to break it off. He knew we would do it.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“It’s the truth.”
“Why did he want to break off their engagement?”
“He didn’t say. He just said it wasn’t going to work.”
I narrowed my eyes on him, growing tired of the conversation. “I don’t have time for this, Martin. I have a meeting to get to.”
“I never wanted you to get hurt. I did what I thought was best.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I believe you mean that. You did what was best for you. You did what was best for your image.” I shook my head. “You never cared about me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting to attend to discuss cleaning up the mess you and your council members made.”
I turned, storming into the meeting room, shutting the door behind me. I walked over to take a seat next to Troy. He took my hand, squeezing it. He leaned in close toward me. “I know this is probably the wrong time to point this out, but you look hot when you’re standing up for yourself.”
I rolled my eyes, smirking at him. “Shut up and pay attention.”
His smile grew. “Yes, ma’am.”
The meeting went for an hour before Troy, and I headed home. He held my hand as he drove, and I hummed. We had the windows down, allowing the cool breeze into the car. I basked in it, soaking up the calm between us.
“You look happy.”
I smiled at him. “That’s because I am. For the first time in a long time, things just feel like they click.”
He nodded. “I understand that.”
“I know that there is still a lot that needs to be done and that we still have so much to figure out. But this feels right.”
He pulled into the house and squeezed my hand. “I’m glad.”
We headed inside, where Troy pulled me into his arms. He gave me a soft kiss, brushing my hair back. “And might I add that you impressed me today.”
“Oh?”
He nodded, his nose brushing over mine. “Yes. I heard what you were saying to Martin, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.”
I inhaled the smell of Troy and pressed my hands onto his chest. “Well, I was being honest.”
He softly kissed me, cupping the back of my head. I leaned into it, softly moaning. Kissing Troy was like a drug I couldn’t get enough of. Troy scooped me up and turned us. He walked down the hallway, where I pulled at his shirt. He threw it off, and I felt his hands squeeze my ass.
I giggled as he turned into the bedroom. His lips never leaving mine as he dropped me right onto the bed. I moaned loudly, reaching my hand up and running it through his hair. I tugged at it, and Troy growled against my lips.
“Fuck, Elize.” He pulled at his belt, and I pulled my shirt off. Troy stared at me, and I could see the lust swimming in his eyes. I licked my lips, wishing I could swim in his gaze. There was so much warmth in them, so much love.
He leaned forward, kissing me softly, and we fell back into the sheets. He grabbed at my pants, unbuttoning my jeans. I ran my hand over his chest, feeling his pecks and raking my hand down his abs.
“Your skin is so soft,” he whispered as he tugged my pants off. His fingers grazed over my leg, rolling from my ankle up my knee. His touch sent shivers down my spine.
I smiled. “You have soft skin as well.”
“Does having a chiseled body help?”
My smile grew. “Oh yes.”
