Dustin pulled himself up and headed for the door.
“Is he okay?” I asked.
Riley shook his head. “He called me frantic. I brought Janella over to help calm the guy, but we couldn’t do anything for the women.”
Titus sighed. “I should probably be getting back. I have rounding to make.”
The space fell quiet as Riley rubbed his hands on the table. “I wish I had the answer on how to help you guys.”
We came up with the idea that the bonding between the Alpha and his mate might be necessary. Maybe it was the answer.
“Now that it’s just the two of us, how is it really going?”
Riley knew about my history with Elize. I sighed. “It could be better, but it could also be worse. I still can’t believe this happened.”
“Do you think this is going to work between you two?”
“I’m going to try my hardest to make it work.”
“Have you told her about what happened?”
“No, and I’m not going to.”
Riley looked shocked. “You’re not?”
I shook my head. “No point in bringing up the past like that.”
“Except that your past is all over. Martin is still around.”
“I know… But I don’t want to hurt her. I just…” I sighed. “I just want this to work this time. Is that stupid to want?”
Riley shook his head. “No, it’s not. I know how much you looked for her. Just don’t let Martin screw this up for you.”
I wasn’t going to.
Chapter 6 - Elize
I was angry the entire drive back home. I was exhausted from lack of sleep. I grabbed my coffee and frowned, realizing it was low. I groaned and rubbed at my eyes. I turned into the convent and pulled into my normal parking spot.
I hopped out and spotted that the front door of the healing center was open. I instantly got worried, and I headed inside. I froze when I spotted Victoria sitting in her chair, her left leg resting on a stool.
I crossed my arms. “Victoria, what are you doing here?”
She looked at me, surprised, and then cringed. “Shoot. I thought you weren’t going to be home for another hour.”
I was so tired because Victoria had fallen down the steps yesterday while closing up the shop. She’d fractured her ankle, which we’d healed, but because of her old age, it wasn’t complete. She needed to stay off it, which meant keeping the healing center closed for a couple of days.
“What are you doing here? You know you can’t be working right now. You have to stay off your ankle.”
“I was just doing a few things, and I have my leg elevated. I barely even put any pressure on it.”
I laid her with a look. “Victoria, you are supposed to be at home resting.”
“I’m not putting any pressure on it. I’m fine.”
“I know that your husband didn’t carry you down here, which means you walked on it. If I had done that, you would have chewed me out for a week.”
She waved a hand. “I would not have.”
