“That can’t be!”

“When did you guys figure this out?”

Riley remained firm. “A couple of days ago.”

“And you waited until now to tell us!”

“We waited to see if she had actual magic or not.”

“She could be dangerous!”

“Do you not realize that you were told to find the solution to the pack!”

“She needs to be monitored.”

Everyone was talking all at once, and I felt like a child whose parents were fighting over them. I suddenly wished I were anywhere but here.

Riley cleared his throat, and they all went silent. He frowned. “Are you done now?”

They frowned at him. “This is a serious matter. She needs to be monitored and locked up until we know the full extent of her abilities. You should know how important it is that you put your focus on the pack.”

“I am focused on the pack, and I know that as my mate, she will be helpful with this ability rather than a hindrance. You tell me that magic is what’s affecting us, well, fight fire with fire. She can learn how to use hers, and we can use it to our advantage.”

I was confused by his words. What did he mean that magic was affecting them? Was there more he wasn’t telling me?

One in the middle shook his head. “You need to be thinking about the pack's safety.”

“I am.” Riley snapped. “If she were an actual danger, I would let you know, but she’s not. She’s my wife, so she is my responsibility. If anyone has a problem with that, they can take it up with me.”

The room fell quiet, and I swallowed. I hadn’t realized how tightly I was gripping onto my pants now. My nails were digging into the fabric.

“We can’t just allow her to go freely, Riley. She has magic. Anything could happen.”

“She is just getting into her magic, and I will be there when she needs anything. I came here as a courtesy.” Riley looked at me. “Let’s go.”

I looked between him and the council, confused. Surely, he wasn’t thinking about leaving in a huff, was he?

“I uhm…”

“This meeting is over.” Riley threw a look over his shoulder and grabbed my hand, pulling me out. I was shocked as we made it into the hallway.

“Are you going to be in trouble for that?”

He shook his head. “They knew they couldn’t argue with me.”

I yanked my hand free. “And why is that, Riley?”

He paused. “Why can’t they get mad?”

“Yes, why won’t they get mad? Is there more you know and didn't tell me?”

He frowned. “Because you could save us.”

“From other witches? Is that what you guys think is causing this? That magic is affecting you?”

I watched his shoulders drop. “Yes.”

I curled my hands into fists. “And why didn’t you say anything earlier? If you knew, why didn't you tell me? You are still keeping things from me.”
