“Would you teach me that?” I asked as I nodded my head toward the group.

His eyebrows went up. “You mean train you?”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

His eyebrows pressed together. “Yeah, I can do that? Is there a reason you want to train suddenly?”

I shook my head. I had thought about telling him about my vision, but decided against it. I needed to figure out what it all meant first before I shared it with others. “No, I just think I should know how.”

“Well, if you want to stretch while I finish up with the group, we can start right after.”

I nodded, knowing that moving around would help calm my nerves. Asher turned back to the ground, and I rubbed my hands together as I sat back down.

I felt a shiver run through me, and I tried to shake it off. I was safe.

Chapter 13 - Asher

I watched as Hazel hit the dummy over and over again. We’d been practicing in the morning for a week, and I was impressed with how well she’d come along. I could see she was getting more confident with each training day, and when I corrected her, she remembered it.

I had taught her front kick, side kicks, and round kicks. Today, we were working on palm strikes and proper punching techniques.

She stopped for a moment to catch her breath. Her hair was pulled back in a tight pony. She was wearing a thin pair of leggings with a thin jacket.

We did a warm-up together, and after showing her everything, I had her start on the dummy. I was impressed by how lightly she moved on her feet.

“Have you done this before?” I asked as I pushed myself off the bench.

She shook her head as she pulled herself back up. “No, this is my first time.”

I clicked my tongue and looked around the space. We were working inside the gym today since the weather was utter shit outside. And I wanted to watch how she moved, but I couldn’t when she was wearing a crap ton of layers.

I spotted the mats and smiled. “Well, let’s move onto the mats.”

She made a face. “What?”

“One on one.”

She crossed her arms, sweat rolling down her face. “Why would we do that?”

“Because I want to see you use the movements against a body.”

“Well, that’s not fair. You’re clearly more powerful and can overpower me.”

He shook his head. “Not if you’re quick and use my momentum against me.”

She sighed but seemed to agree as she followed me over toward the mats. “Alright, I want you to come at me. Do whatever you have to do to win.”

Her eyebrows went up. “Seriously? That’s how you want to do this?”

“I want to see what you need to work on. And if this were actually happening, you need to know what you can do. How you can protect yourself.”

She sighed heavily and rolled her shoulders back. “Fine.”

We both took a stance, and Hazel came at me. She started with a side kick, which I caught. She turned her hips, freeing her hand from my hold. She then moved closer and threw a punch at me.

I caught her hand and smirked. But I didn’t see her leg come up and slam into my gut.

I grunted as I pulled in air, but twirled her around, pulling her hard against me. We fumbled backward, and I lost my footing. We hit the mat hard, and she yelped as we landed on our sides.
