“You motherfucker.” Jenna stomped a foot on the carpeting. “Why didn’t you call me sooner? And you should have filed the missing person report last night. She’s a kid.”

“Jenna, get on the damn train, now.” Matt disconnected, leaving her shaking.

Strong arms dressed her, and a soft voice comforted her as she stared at the wall.

Finally, she looked into Hunter’s eyes. “Something felt off all week. Something bad happened to my daughter. I know it.”

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t eavesdropping, but I could hear the conversation. I’m sure she’s fine. Teenagers do these things. I disappeared a few times when I was a kid and worried my parents sick, but I was usually just off getting drunk with a buddy.”

“But she hasn’t been leaving Lisa’s side for more than a few hours at a time,” Jenna said.

His brow furrowed. “Hmm. Let’s get you packed.”

Jenna stared out the taxi window as Hunter caressed her hand. “I’ve been so on edge lately, and I have no idea why,” she said.

“Can I confide something in you?”

She faced him.

“I’ve been on edge too. I feel like a huge-ass pussy, and my roommate is harassing the shit out of me for it.”

“Has anything bad happened to you?”

“Nope. Although I have a fan that’s been creeping me out. I get dick pics and boob pics, and people ask me to fuck them up the ass, and honestly, it doesn’t bother me. But this particular fan keeps talking about presents for my dogs and asking where I live.”

Jenna winced.

“She’s the first person to like my posts, and she comments on everything. At least I think she’s a she. I finally had to block her,” he said.

Their predicament hit with a thud, and Jenna moaned. “A cat icon?”

Hunter’s eyes widened. “How did you know?”

“An ABC something or other?”

“Yeah? Why?”

Jenna dropped her head into her hands and groaned. She’d almost confided they had the same stalker Friday night but had stopped herself because then he would know she’d been leering at his feed.

Her pent-up words filled her cheeks until a breath of air allowed them to tumble out. “That’s the person I blocked. I thought she was creepy but harmless.”

“What the fuck?” he said.

“What the freaking fuck?” Jenna echoed as torrential tears poured down her cheeks.

She tapped at her phone and waited for her hero to answer. The second she heard his voice, she blurted out, “Dad, I think I’m being stalked by a psycho fan. What if she kidnapped Kylie?”

Chapter Eighteen

Arkansas was living proof that one didn’t need a driver’s license to be a good driver. One also didn’t need to use a government-run Global Positioning System to navigate an interstate trip. Her grandmother had taught her to read an old-fashioned road map when she was twelve. While sitting at the kitchen table under their Savior’s watchful eye, they’d used colorful markers to trace routes. Thank Jesus she’d maintained the skill because it was finally coming in handy.

She pulled into a convenience store parking lot and killed the engine. She took her journal from the front of her backpack and made a to-do list:

1. Eat lunch.

2. Check map.
