Eric held his gaze, unflinching, but his ferocity gradually abated as he considered Matthias’s words. “Ordinarily, I’d suggest the farm, but I don’t think she feels drawn there anymore.”

“Then where?” When no immediate answer came, Matthias quietly asked the question he’d hoped to avoid. “Where would she go to score more pills? Someone in the area was supplying her.”

Behind him, Emma climbed out of the sectional and disappeared from the room, but Matthias kept his focus on Eric.

“For alcohol, any liquor store would do. As for prescription opioids?” Eric shook his head, his brow still creased. Then his eyes widened. “Wait. I remember overhearing her and Zeke talking about meeting a guy at the Highlander Club.”

“Where’s that?”

“In Washington. From the name, you’d think it was upscale. In truth, it’s anything but.” Eric slumped into the recliner. “The problem is, she has no money.”

Matthias knew of a way a young woman might barter to get her hands on drugs but wasn’t going to say out loud.

Emma stormed back into the living room clutching her handbag. “Yes, she does.” She removed her wallet and held it up. “All the cash I had with me is gone. So is my credit card.”

Eric opened his mouth, apparently to launch into another round of blame, but Matthias silenced him with a look.

“How much cash?” Matthias asked Emma.

“Almost two hundred dollars.”

He touched her arm. “Let’s go. I’ll call in some favors.” Pointing a finger at Eric, he said, “Call anyone Nell might contact. Let me know if you learn anything.” He waited for a sign of belligerence. There was none.

“You do the same.”

“I will.” Matthias glanced behind him to make sure Emma was out of earshot. “And you’ll want to line up a criminal defense attorney.”

“For Nell?” Eric sounded stunned.

“For yourself. You failed to mention you threatened to kill Sonny Jones.”

Emma gingerly touched her head, hoping Matthias didn’t notice. Running to catch up with Nell had done her bruised brain no good, and she prayed she hadn’t caused more damage. Beside her, Matthias drove in silence.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

It took a few moments before he said, “Do you know where the Highlander Club is?”

Stunned, she shifted to take in his profile, his determined gaze fixed on the road in front of them. “The Highlander Club? In Washington?”

“Yeah.”

“I know where it is. Why doyouwant to know?”

His expression changed from determined to sour. “Give me directions. Then I’m going to drop you off at a hotel.”

“Hotel?”

“I don’t think you want to spend another night sleeping on the ground. You look like you have a headache.”

So much for hiding her pain. “Sleeping on the ground has nothing to do with it.”

He shot a glance at her before returning to the road. “What happened?”

“Chasing my sister down the street wasn’t good for my concussion.”

He grunted a response. “Point me in the direction of the nearest hotel, and then give me directions to the Highlander Club.”
