Chapter One

Kaylee

The sun is shining and it seems like the perfect day to start a new dog walking business. I’ve been really nervous about starting today, fussing over what outfit to wear to make a good impression in the neighborhood, but I’ve finally decided on my yellow sundress and sandals. I want to look good, but reliable. I need this little business to work out if I’m going to save up for my next semester at college.

I’ve been studying art for the past two years, but it’s an expensive course. My parents have helped me out as much as they can, but I still need endless money to pay for my art supplies. That means I need to get my act together and find a way to make money. I figured this way would be the most fun, and I got to make my own fliers to stretch my creative muscles.

The truth is, summer at home is boring. Most of my friends have moved on from this stagnant town, full of middle-class people with ordinary lives and quiet existences. Having a job will actually be a way to get me out of my own boredom. Plus, maybe it’ll be a way for me to meet new people.

I sigh to myself as I set off to start handing out my fliers, walking down the street where I grew up. I guess I had a feeling that this summer would be the one where I’d finally fall in love. I’m turning twenty-one soon, and I’ve never found a man that I’m even remotely interested in. Men my own age just don’t seem to cut it. They flirt and joke around and try their hardest to get your attention, but at the end of the day, they’re immature. They just don’t have anything I want in a man. I want someone strong, someone protective, someone who is going to add something meaningful to my life.

But I guess I won’t find a man like that in my home town.

I head up and down the street, posting my fliers through the doors of my neighbors. As I head back up toward my parent’s house, I glance at our next door neighbor’s house. We’ve yet to see the person who moved in next door last week. I’ve heard their car leaving early in the mornings and coming back late at night. They must be someone very busy, probably driving up to the city for work. But I swear I’ve heard a dog in the house several times, maybe now is the perfect time to introduce myself. I could even walk their dog while they’re out at work.

With my heart pounding hard, I move up the path, noting that the car is in the driveway for once. They must be home. For some reason, I’m overcome with nerves, as though something crazy is about to happen. I knock on the door and try to calm myself down, telling myself I’m being ridiculous.

And then the door opens. And right in front of me stands the man of my dreams. Tall. Muscular body. Dark eyes, dark hair, dark vibe. His eyes fixate on me and I feel like I’m melting right here on the spot.

He’s the one.

Christian

The woman standing in my doorway is a work of art. In her yellow sundress, she glows like the sun, more radiant than anyone I’ve ever laid eyes on before. Her brunette hair hangs low down her back and her dark brown eyes are full of beauty and innocence. One look at her and I can feel my cock standing at attention, rock hard in my pants. She’s at least half my age and yet somehow, impossibly, I know that this woman was made for me.

“I’m sorry to disturb you,” she squeaks. I cock my head to the side, taking in the curves of her sexy body.

“You’re not disturbing me,” I tell her. Far from it, in fact. I’m glad she’s here. I’ve been waiting a lifetime for her, after all. I’ve told myself for a long time that there’s simply no one out there for me, knowing that I need a very specific woman to satisfy my needs. But now she’s standing right in front of me. I don’t know a thing about her except that I need to make her mine, but that’s enough. All I need is to know that she and I are going to be together.

“I’m your neighbor...my name is Kaylee.”

She holds her hand out for me to shake. I’m amused by her formality and how nervous she seems around me, but I hope she’ll get over that soon. I don’t want anything getting in the way of me getting to know her. I take her hand and shake it.

“A pleasure,” I say. “I’m Christian. How can I help you today?”

“Um, well…”
