“You think I care enough about you to call you? The only reason I finally did it is because Jaylen said you refused to accept that it was over. Look at yourself. You’re breaking into someone’s home and causing all this property damage just because a man doesn’t want you anymore. You’re calling all day and night while Jaylen isn’t even thinking about you.”
“Jaylen hasn’t told me a damn thing. Why am I still talking to you? Jaylen, get your weak ass in here! You got your woman calling me instead of being a man and talking to me yourself. I gave you ten fucking years. The least you could give me is an explanation.”
“Sage?” I heard Jaylen’s voice before he came into the light, rubbing his eyes. There was no way he had slept through all that commotion.
“Is this really what we’re doing?” I asked him, lifting my brows as I moved closer to the door.
“What are you doing here? How did you even get to this girl’s house?”
“Boy, you’re asking the wrong fucking questions. She’s been calling and texting me pictures of y’all and your beautiful home half the night. You didn’t have the decency to tell me you moved out. You put your assistant up to it. You really are a bitch-ass punk like my daddy said. Boy, I should—” I said, rearing back with that poker, ready to take his head off.
The sound of someone pounding on the door made Rebecca scurry from in front of Jaylen. He stood there looking at me with sad puppy eyes, ready to spew a bunch of lies.
“Sage, baby, come on. You know I wouldn’t do nothing to fuck you over. I was drinking and fell asleep over here. Rebecca is just tripping because you’re at her house.”
See, I knew I should have just beheaded him when I had the chance. I hated it when someone tried to play with my intelligence.
“Let me take one guess who paid for this place. We’re losingourfucking house, and you’re over here playing house with another woman? I caught your ass red-handed, and you still got the nerve to lie. Is that how you treat your son and the woman you’ve been dragging along for ten years.”
“Losing the house? What the hell are you talking about, Sage?” he asked, sounding convincingly confused for once.
“There she is. This woman broke into our house!” Rebecca yelled and pointed at me as two uniformed police officers rushed me.
The fire poker finally dropped from my hand as I accepted defeat. For the second time, in a matter of minutes I asked myself how the hell did I get here.

KLEVER “KD” DAVIS
For an hour, I watched Sage’s location at the police precinct in her area, debating about whether or not to call her. What if something was wrong with JJ? What if something had happened to her? I didn’t even want to think like that, but what the hell was she doing at the police station at this time of night? See, I knew I shouldn’t have left her.
When my phone rang, I damn near dropped it on the floor. Seeing Sage’s number on the screen almost gave me a heart attack. Once I realized that I didn’t actually get caught in the act of stalking, I cleared my throat and leaned back against the headboard, trying to relax before I answered.
“Hey, what’s up?”
There was only silence coming from the other end. For a second, I considered that she might have pocket dialed me. That didn’t stop me from listening in.
“KD.” Her voice was small, but the urgency behind it had me on my feet before she could elaborate.
“What’s wrong, Sage?” I asked, trying not to sound as panicked as I was.
“I need you,” she whimpered.
That was all it took. Without hesitation, I was headed to rip apart whoever made her sound like that. I grabbed my gun off the nightstand on my way out because if I couldn’t dry her tears, these bullets would. I didn’t even think as I jumped in my car and tore out of the driveway of the property I’d recently bought in the city. I’d been using it for a vacation rental unless I needed to pop in to check on my people, which happened to be about once a month.Sage and her son were the only people I knew in Jade Harbor, but that didn’t matter.
“I’m in freaking jail,” Sage revealed, reminding me that she was still on the phone.
I didn’t even think about the fact that she never told me where she was, because I already knew. Well, I knew she was at the police station. Hearing her say thatshewas the one in jail hit a little different. My initial thought was who did this to her, not what did she do. That wasn’t important.
“I’m on my way,” I assured her.
“KD.” She called my name cautiously.
“Yeah?”
“Pleasedon’t call Supreme or my dad.”
“Sage, you know I can’t keep shit from Supreme.”
