“I’m starting to feel the same way.”
We cleaned up and dressed quickly. My mind was more occupied with how my family would feel about me and KD than it was about the father of my son cheating on me and leaving me for his assistant. I headed for the door of my bedroom, looking back at KD as he picked his phone up from the foot of the bed. His eyes ballooned, and I wondered what it could be.
“Wait, baby doll.”
“What?” I asked, laughing nervously as I swung the door open.
“Bash just texted me.”
Raising my shoulders, I frowned at his reaction. “OK, what did he say? You look like you’ve been called into the principal’s office,” I joked.
“Come outside and holler at me when you finish fucking my only daughter.”
My stomach plummeted to the floor.
“Shit, shit, shit,” I whispered.
My eyes shot to the living room. When did he get here? I guessed the timeline on that awkward conversation had just moved up a little. I moved ahead of KD, rushing out to the backyard. I knew that was where my dad had to be because he loved to sit out on the patio.
The thick smoke from his cigar floated through the air as he lowered the glowing tube from his lips. I welcomed the familiar smoky scent as my eyes focused on him. My throat tightened as I opened my mouth, prepared to explain myself like a scorned child. I cleared my throat, and KD appeared at my side.
“I didn’t call you, Sage,” Bash said, waving me off with one hand.
“I know, but?—”
“He doesn’t need your protection, baby girl. I’ll talk to you in a minute.”
“Where’s JJ?” I asked, scanning the backyard for my son.
Tilting his head, Sebastian’s eyebrows lifted slowly as he continued to look at me. Historically, that was my cue to drop it. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see KD’s hands balled into fists at his side. Even my dad chastising me made him defensive.
See why I loved him and hated myself for it? KD was everything. Sebastian pulled the cigar to his lips again as he waited for me to leave my own backyard. The two men having a silent standoff were the two people who made me feel most protected. I didn’t need this to go left.
“Go ahead and make sure you found everything you needed, baby doll,” KD instructed.
“You got my baby girl calling you sir, son?” Sebastian asked, making me wish I could disappear into thin air. I was beyondmortified as I turned to head back into the house. How much had he heard?
“Bash, you know I would never do anything fucked up to your daughter.”
“I know you know better. Nah, you know what, Sage. Stay right there. You and Jaylen break up, and I gotta find out through an email?”
Not this again. Jaylen and his freaking emails!
“An email? What email?” I asked.
“I got the most interesting surprise when I opened a video attachment showing footage of this knucklehead right here yelling and claiming that you are his wife. Jaylen seems to think you’ve been pretending he was like a brother to you and fucking him right under his nose the whole time.” Sebastian chuckled dryly as his eyes shifted between the two of us. Neither of us spoke. “Care to explain what the hell is going on? Because from what I heard a few minutes ago, you two have a hell of a lot more going on than just being friends.”
Taking a step forward, KD spoke first. “Bash, it’s not like that. It’s never been like that.”
“My question was directed to my daughter. Since she wants to come out here to defend you, she can speak for herself. She wants to be in the conversation, so let her answer the damn question. Is this why you and Jaylen broke up? Have you been sneaking around with KD behind everyone’s back this whole time, and now you’re so bold that you’re fucking him in this man’s house?”
“No,” I said, shaking my head as tears pooled in my eyes. “Jaylen was cheating on me with Rebecca. I don’t know how long it’s been going on, but she’s pregnant. He bought her a house, and to make matters worse, I got a foreclosure notice for this one. He has some nerve accessing our home cameras to see whatI’m doing when he won’t even answer the freaking phone for me.”
Bash was on his feet before I could finish my statement. The rage in his eyes made me nervous.
“Why the fuck didn’t you tell me, baby? I swear I’m shooting that bastard in the head as soon as I see him.”
“See, Daddy, that’s why I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want you to do anything irrational. Jaylen isn’t worth it. I already went to jail behind his shit.”
