“Myome––”

“You were willing to hurt her feelings to fuck other women but hurting her to protect your children was where you drew the line?”

“I did the best I could with what I had.”

“That’s a cop out.”

“And I’m sitting in front of you trying to take responsibility for that.”

“So what do you want me to do with all of this new information?”

“I want you to allow me to say I’m sorry and I love you, even if I haven’t shown it to you the way I should have. I want you to know I’m here and want to be here for you and show up in any way you’ll allow and I want you to know that even though I didn’tfight for you when you were younger, I’m ready to fight for you now, Myome. I mean that. Truly.”

“I’m not a child anymore. I don’t need anyone to fight for me… but if I ever do, that man right outside of that door has got it covered. I promise.”

“That’s understandable.” My father clasped his hands together. “Well, look. Can I just give you a small peace offering?”

My eyebrows knitted together.

“I don’t––”

“Please.”

“Okay. Sure, Dad.”

“Thank you.” He dug into his pocket, pulled out a little flash drive, and set it on my desk. “And thank you for talking to me. I, uhm, I hope your music and marriage are both everything you could have ever wanted, and if you decide you’d like to talk, the door is always open on my end, Myome.”

“Okay.” I nodded.

“Okay,” he repeated, then cleared his throat and stood. “I’ll, uh, I’ll just get out of your hair now.”

“Okay.”

He adjusted his hat and headed for the door. It flew open before he could touch the handle. He and Drix looked each other up and down briefly. Drix moved to the side and gestured for him to go.

“It’s time for your session.”

“For my session?” I repeated.

“Yeah. I told you we were getting you back in the studio.”

“You didn’t tell me today.”

“Well, surprise.” He grinned as he walked further into my office. I rolled my eyes but stood and made my way over. He pulled me in as soon as I was close enough and glanced down at me. “How was the talk?”

“It was good.”

“Did you get what you needed?”

“I got clarification about some things and we’ll see what happens.”

“Take it slow though, alright?”

“I will. I promise.”

“Good.” He let his hand drift to my ass and tapped it lightly. “Let’s go.”

“Let’s go.”
