Drix jogged up the stairs and we all followed him. He didn’t bother knocking when he got to the apartment. He tried the doorknob then took a step back and kicked it as hard as he could. It rattled and people inside started yelling. He kicked the door again and the little frame cracked with the third kick. He shifted and crashed his shoulder into the door. Once it flew open, he aimed his gun inside.

“Where the fuck is Genie?” he asked loudly. There were several people loitering around the living room, all of their eyes on Drix. “Genie!” he yelled. “Ay, get all these fucking people out of here. Shade, you’re with me.”

A shrill scream cut through the house and I followed Drix and Shade who headed toward the sound. There was yelling, crashing, and a baby crying in one of the rooms and Drix banged on the door.

“Move! They’re here for me.” Genie yelled. “Stop! I’m fucking serious!”

“Myome?” Drix glanced at me.

“Do it.” I took a step back.

“A’ight.” He nudged his head toward the door and Shade took a step back then kicked the door open.

It flew backwards and banged the wall. Drix slid inside and closed the space between him and the man who had Genie on the bed, his hand around her throat.

“Fuck you doing in here?” Drix asked.

“The fuck this got to do with you?” He yanked Genie and both of her hands went to his arm where she clawed at him. “You fucking him too? Huh, Genie?” He shook her.

Drix aimed his gun at the man.

“Wait. Stop. Please, please, please,” Genie said quickly. “Wait.”

“Let her throat go before I make y’all baby another fatherless child, bitch.”

I watched him look from Drix to Shade who had his gun aimed. The man tossed Genie on the bed. Both of her hands went to her throat and she gasped lightly while she started to suck in air rapidly.

“Get your baby and let’s go,” Drix said, ignoring the man in front of him.

Genie rushed to her child, plucked him up, and hurried out of the room.

“I’m not gon’ let you pull a gun on me too many more times,” her baby daddy warned.

“Yeah. A’ight.”

Drix flipped his gun around and offered it back to Shade who glanced from the gun to Drix and back before taking it. The baby daddy laughed and Drix grinned.

“What’s up?”

Drix socked him in his mouth without responding and they started fist fighting.

Shade reached over, grabbed my arm, and yanked me in.

I grimaced and turned my head to look away when the man stumbled and Drix took that moment to elbow him in his chest and slam his face into the wall when he instinctively hunched over. His nose started bleeding and Drix hit him another two times while he was still off balance and sent him to the ground.

“Fuck out of here,” he grumbled and licked the blood from his newly busted lip while he shook his bleeding hand. “You ready?”

“Yeah.” I nodded.

“Good. Come on.” He gestured for me to lead and I slowly walked out of the room.

Alan was leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest and his gun in hand.

“Dashawn walked Genie and her baby out to your truck already,” he offered.

“Good. Let’s go.” Drix glanced at me. “Didn’t I tell you to stay at the door?”

I didn’t respond and he shook his head but didn’t push further.
