Sofia’s pulse betrayed her with a single hard beat.

“Your wife?”she repeated.

“Last I checked,” he replied.

Sofia rolled her eyes.“Possessive much?”

Dmitri guided her through another turn, bringing her even closer.

“Victor was flirting with you,” Dmitri said quietly.

Sofia arched a brow.“Should I be flattered you’re jealous?”

He didn’t answer. For the first time all evening, something dark flickered behind his eyes. Was that anger, or something more dangerous?

The next turn brought them impossibly close.Close enough for him to feel her breath.Anyone watching would probably assume they were whispering something intimate.

“Careful,” she murmured.“People might think you might actually like me.”

That almost sounded like a taunt.

Feeling reckless, Dimitri pulled her closer until her soft breasts pressed against his suit.He kissed her then, testing her reaction at first. When she responded, his hunger deepened.

Dimitri slid his tongue into her mouth, pleased when she met him halfway. When they finally pulled apart, she looked at him with wide eyes, as though she couldn’t quite believe what had just happened.

Then the dance ended, and he was forced to release her.

“Excuse me, I need to make a quick trip to the ladies’ room,” Sofia said.

Dimitri watched her disappear into the crowd. So sweet, he thought, touching his own lips.

Chapter Six

Sofia woke to the soundof gunfire. For a moment she didn’t know where she was.The loud burst of bullets being fired shattered her sleep so violently that she came awake with a gasp, her heart already racing before her mind had caught up.

Darkness filled the room.Heavy curtains blocked most of the moonlight, leaving only faint silver outlines across the furniture.Another burst of gunfire echoed through the night, and it sounded far too close for her liking.
