“Good.”

Jonah took the glass and set it on the nightstand.

I lay back against the pillows.

He stretched beside me, naked and warm, one arm resting above his head.

The center of the bed was no longer divided.

I turned onto my side.

Jonah faced me.

“What happens now?” I asked.

“We sleep.”

“That’s your entire emotional plan?”

“It’s late.”

“You’re avoiding the question.”

“I don’t know the answer.”

I touched the short beard along his jaw.

“I don’t either.”

Jonah turned his face and kissed my palm.

I moved closer until my head rested against his chest.

His arm came around me.

My phone remained silent in the handbag beside the dresser. The red dress hung from the bedroom door. My new boots stood next to Jonah’s work-worn pair.

I’d chosen to stay for one more day.

Wrapped around him, I already knew one day wasn’t going to be enough.

Chapter Four

JONAH

Morning light crept across the bed while I lay awake.

It slid across Talia’s curls, caught on the diamond at her throat, and stopped at the sheet tangled around her waist. One bare leg rested over mine, and she lay with one hand across my chest as though she’d placed it there on purpose.

I wanted her to stay exactly where she was.

I just didn’t know whether she’d feel the same once she woke.

Talia opened her eyes and focused on me.

“Good morning,” she said.

“Good morning.”
