“I understand.”

“You don’t lose anything.”

“That isn’t why I asked.”

“And if I stay, this doesn’t become part of the job.”

“It can’t.” His voice softened. “I’m asking Cassidy to stay. I’m not asking my bodyguard.”

I drew a slow breath.

He’d waited until another agent took responsibility for his safety.

“I’m going to change,” I said.

His gaze warmed. “Should I expect you to come back?”

“Yes.”

I carried the bag into the bathroom before I had to say anything else.

I changed into coral sleep shorts and a soft white ribbed tank. I washed away the sunscreen and humidity, then stared at myself in the mirror.

My hair hung loose around my face. Freckles covered my nose, shoulders, and the upper curve of my breasts. I wasn’t wearing gear, shoes, or anything that marked me as Sunbreak Security.

I opened the bathroom door.

Shane had removed his T-shirt.

Of course he had.

He stood beside the bed in gray lounge shorts, bare feet planted on the rug. His deep tan made the white sheets brighter behind him. Defined muscle cut across his chest and abdomen, but the familiar grin didn’t appear.

He waited.

My bare feet sank into the rug as I crossed to him.

“You changed your mind about the shirt,” I said.

“It wasn’t helping.”

“That was private information.”

“I read the report in your face.”

I stopped within reach.

Shane lifted one hand, then paused before touching me. “May I?”

“Yes.”

His fingers slid into my hair near my temple. He traced the strands down to my collarbone.

“I’ve been wondering what this looked like down.”

“You’ve had more urgent concerns.”

“I can have several concerns at once.”
