“I was referring to giving you your job back, Miss Spencer,” he said. “Surely, you’ve missed working under me all these weeks.”

“I haven’t, but I’m sure you’ve missed me.”

“My life has been just fine, Miss Spencer,” he said. “I don’t let my emotions get the best of me.”

“Just verdicts, right?” I asked. “Speaking of which, don’t you have a new jury to buy off?”

He hung up without saying another word.

The following evening

“Judge Ashton?” Mara stepped into my office. “Do you have a minute?”

“Plenty for you, Mara.” I set down my phone. “What do you need?”

“Two things,” she said.

“I’m sure it’s a yes to both of them.”

“Maybe…” She shifted on her feet. “One, I need permission to hire Damien Carter to do some personal research for you.”

“What type of personal research?”

“Looking into what Olivia’s doing, if she’s okay, if she’s being treated well wherever she chooses to work next, things like that.”

“Why would I pay for him to look into that?”

“So, you can stop asking me to use my work hours to do it…”

Silence.

“Fine.” I refused to say any more. “What’s the second thing?”

“There’s a lawyer here who says you owe him a summary reading favor.”

“Tell him I don’t do those anymore, especially not without an appointment.”

“This guy said he used to intern at one of the first firms you worked in…He’s claiming you offered a permanent advice pass to his entire cohort if they ever needed it before you left.”

Bullshit…

“Send him in.” I needed a distraction.

“Right away.” She disappeared, and seconds later a man in a dark brown suit moved into my doorway.

Recognition hit me like a bullet, and heartache shattered in my chest.

You’ve grown up so much since I last saw you…

“Ryan?” I asked.

“Yes, sir.” He smiled, extending his hand. “Ryan Lennox. How do you even know my name?”
