“It was weird,” a man a few years older than her replied, then began stripping the weapons from their foes.“It was almost like they went into some kind of trance.”

“I saw something like this once,” an older man said.“It was during a war with a rival gang. Our enemies got high on some new kind of drug that was meant to make them into maniacal killing machines.Instead, they turned into drooling idiots.”

Covered in tattoos, he looked like he’d lived a hard life, yet the community had taken him in.He helped the others search the bodies for anything useful and handed the guns over to others who were weaponless.

“What if the rest of them turn up when these guys don’t return to their lair?”someone asked fearfully.

“Then we’ll turn their own weapons against them and defend ourselves again,” the ex-gang member said.“We can’t let them keep raiding our town and picking us off one at a time.”

“Let’s hope they’ll all take that drug that makes them stupid and useless,” the young woman said.“They’re all insane killers and they’ll slaughter us all for what we did to their friends.”

“What are we going to do with the bodies?”a middle-aged woman asked. She limped over, using a cane for balance.“Their corpses will draw coyotes and other predators to our town if we don’t get rid of them.”

“We’ll pile them into the trucks and drive them a safe distance away,” another person suggested.

Nods of approval and agreement came from the others, then they began heaving the dead men into the beds of their own trucks.

Bria was about to leave when she heard more vehicles approaching. She glanced over her shoulder just in time to see someone pointing a gun with a scope at her.She tried to dart to the side, but the bullet slammed into her shoulder, sending her spinning into the tree.

Agony tore through Bria as she grasped hold of the trunk with one hand.Blood was spurting from her wound and the bullet was stuck in her joint.Involuntary tears of pain blinded her.Blinking the tears away, she couldn’t concentrate enough to use her magic as twelve more assailants pulled over. Two of them leaped out and raced towards her, grinning in evil triumph. She heard a distant roar of pure rage, then was shocked to sense Urzra rapidly drawing closer.

Chapter Seventeen

––––––––

URZRA COULDN’T BELIEVEhe’d turned into a gigantic chicken. He was afraid of a five foot two female he could pick up with one finger. It would have been amusing if he hadn’t been so embarrassed.

Bria had stopped again. He hung back, peering at the distant town.He almost went to her rescue when he heard two vehicles speeding towards the cluster of buildings, but forced himself to hang back.He heard an altercation, but didn’t feel any pain from his cambion.

The sense that something bad was about to happen became lodged inside his head. He’d been feeling uneasy for the past couple of hours, but it was far worse now.A few minutes passed and Bria hadn’t moved yet. Then he heard more trucks coming and his unease turned to dread.

Pain roared through his left shoulder joint as a loud gunshot pierced the air.Urzra roared in fury and sprinted towards the offending human.Zeroing in on the man standing in the bed of the lead truck, the knight leaped into the vehicle moments after it came to a stop.He grabbed hold of the lowlife holding a rifle with a scope on it and twisted his head to the side.He used so much force that he almost tore the human’s head off with a sickening crunch.

Urzra locked onto his female and saw two enemies running towards her.Bria’s face was full of fear and she didn’t seem to be able to use her magic against them.Calling his sword from the Void, the Knight of Order sprinted to intercept the marauders.Bowling them over, he flipped one of the men on top of the other, then skewered them both with his blade at the same time.

“Urzra?”Bria asked incredulously as the gunfight continued.
