She stops abruptly.

I squeak.

And of course, I lose my balance.

“Oh!”

Before I can tip sideways, Micah is there.

One arm catches me around the waist.

Strong.

Certain.

His horse presses close enough that our knees brush.

“You okay?”

His voice is barely above a whisper.

I nod.

“I've got you.”

“I know.”

God...

Do I know.

He's so close now I can see every tiny fleck of green hidden inside his blue eyes.

Feel the warmth of his breath.

Smell fresh air, clean soap, leather, and the faint scent of cedar that somehow always clings to him.

Neither of us moves.

Neither of us seems interested in creating distance. His hand is still resting at my waist. Mine has somehow found his forearm.

I don't remember reaching for him. It’s innate now.

Natural.

Instinctive.

“You know,” I say softly.

“Hmm?”

“I think I'm getting the hang of this.”

“The horse?”

I smile.

“The cowboy.”
