I lift him over my shoulder, and I turn towards my truck.
This conversation is over.
Behind me, I hear Sawyer’s voice.
“Well, I reckon this won’t happen again.”
“Shit, I think one of them pissed themselves the ride over,” Benji grunts after tossing the last body into the trench before adding the special brew of chemicals that’ll work to disintegrate the bodies and all biological evidence.
“Better hose out the van when we get back,” Sawyer says.
I don't look back.
By the time I toss this asshole into the back and climb into the driver’s seat, dawn is beginning to lighten the eastern sky.
I drop him off at a gas station on the highway, in the back where no one can see me remove his blindfold before tossing some water in his face.
“Th-thanks, man.”
“Don’t thank me. Just disappear.”
He nods.
I get back in the truck.
Beside me, my phone lights up with the image from the camera overlooking my cabin’s porch.
Sloane.
Sitting there with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the horizon.
My heart squeezes so hard, I find it difficult to breathe for a moment.
She’s safe. Home. Right where she belongs.
I allow myself one small smile.
Now I can go home.
Chapter 30-Sloane
I can’t believe I’m getting on a horse.
Me.
Who even am I right now?
“Okay, I’ll do this but I have one condition.”
Micah glances over his shoulder as he leads two horses out of the barn.
“What's that?”
“You promise not to laugh.”
One dark eyebrow lifts.
“I'll think about it.”
