Was this kind of intense attraction, this ridiculously strong connection and pull between us, normal? Yeah, I always thought I fell in love easily, my infatuation with anyone who was interested in me making me overlook red flags and seeing passion where there was none. But maybe it was more than that this time? Maybe, just maybe, magic was playing a dangerous role in what was between us.
There was no way... Right?
Cam noticed my rubbing. Concern flashed in his eyes as he turned to me,
“Are you feeling alright, Victor?”
“Uh,” I cleared my throat, suddenly at a loss for words. “I...”
Tell him. Just tell him! What if he’s just waiting for you to say it first? What if he loves you too, dummy?
My heart was beating ridiculously fast now, my palms growing uncomfortably sweaty. This was hardly my first time confessing my feelings, but itwasthe first time it held so much weight. The first time it felt so... important.
But could I tell him with the suspicions of my magic looming over my head?
“I... I, um...” I stuttered as Cam grabbed both of my chilled hands in his warm ones. “Cam, I-”
A loud ringing made me jump, my heart leaping straight out of my chest.
“I think that’s your phone,” Cam said as he glanced at my pocket. “But what were you about to say?”
I pulled out my phone to see it lit up, Alice’s face filling the screen. I nervously met Cam’s gaze and swallowed, a mix of relief and frustration filling me.
“It, uh... It can wait.”
I swiped to answer the call, putting it on speaker, and Alice immediately said by way of greeting,
“Sorry if I’m interrupting any sexy times,” I nearly choked as Cam stifled a laugh, “but I’ve got news.”
Clearing my throat, I shot Cam a weak glare that made him grin.
“Well, is it good or bad?” I asked, knowing she wouldn’t have called during me and Cam’s getaway music fest date without good reason. I froze when she replied with a rare, serious tone,
“I’ll letyou decide.”
CHAPTER 15:
When pasts come a calling,
maybe send them to voicemail.
“SOMEONE HAS BEEN ASKING about Camden,” Alice told me, and I went very, very still. So did Cam.
“Who?” I asked after a few long, tense moments.
“Dunno. Some guy; I didn’t get a good look at his face,” she said. “I overheard him talking in the store when I was grabbing some groceries.”
“What did he say?” My words were filled with false calm, but I could feel my nerves bleeding through. “How do you know they were asking aboutmyCam?”
Cam squeezed my hand, expression going liquid soft at how I called him mine.
“Because they said they’d heard he’d been in a bad accident.” Cam and I shared a look as Alice continued, “But then they said these two ladies... Well, I can’t remember their names. I think they both rhymed? Anyway, they told this guy that they’d seen him just the other day at their diner and he was alive and well with ahandsome young boyfriend with curly brown hair. Well,” she scoffed, “I could only assume it was you two. But the handsome part...”
When she went quiet, I ignored the jibe and prodded, “What else?”
“What do you mean what else? He left.”
“Why didn’t you follow him?” I demanded.
