She nods and disappears into the bedroom, locking the door.

I frown at the closed door. What is going on? Between her unusual behavior and Dario’s, I don’t know which end is up.

I play with Sonny for a while, helping him make a racetrack and racing his model cars with him.

After a few hours, I’m dozing on the couch while Sonny watches cartoons when Beth speaks up.

“Whatcha watching, kiddo?”

He rattles off the name of the show and I sit up straight, smiling at her.

“Did you get some work done?”

“I did, thanks.” She sits next to Sonny. “Ready for a movie?”

He grins up at her. “Only if we can make popcorn!”

“Come on, kid. Popcorn is a given.”

I stay on the couch, just watching them as they make the popcorn with a fond smile on my face.

I’m so lucky to have Beth. I don’t know what I would have done without her when I was pregnant or when Sonny was a newborn.

She kept me from going insane. Picked up the pieces of my broken heart.

Sonny falls asleep early, cuddled up in the corner of her sectional couch.

Beth glances over at me. “So how’s it going with you and Dario?”

“There is no me and Dario."

She scoffs. “Please. You’re literally married to him. And you’re sleeping with him, right?”

I shut my mouth with a clicking sound.

She sighs. “I just... I want you to be careful, Liana. You know he doesn’t have a faithful bone in his body. He’ll only hurt you again.”

“I know,” I say softly.

But part of me keeps thinking:what if he’s changed?

DARIO

It’s after seven by the time Giovanni and Rocco get there, and I’ve already been waiting with two of my other men—cousins, actually, Paolo and Lorenzo. They’ve always been loyal, and they’re big enough to provide some muscle in the even that some of our enemies show up to this fake shipment.

I’m not sure anything will come of it.

Beth can’t be the one pulling the strings on this, can she? It seems ridiculous to expend this much manpower for my little cousin, but... I have to be sure.

“There's a rat in our midst,” I say to the four of them when Giovanni and Rocco arrive.

Paolo looks up from his phone. He’s only twenty-four, but he’s done good work for me in the past.

“Family?” he asks, an eyebrow raised.

I blink at him. “How did you know?”
