He swung his long legs off the desk, got up and we hugged.

I’m not a fan of the feds. Law enforcement and I don’t see eye to eye very often. But I made an exception for Kennedy. I’d saved his life once, and in turn he had saved mine. While we’d spoken on the phone a few times, we hadn’t seen each other in years.

‘You’ve lost weight, Eddie,’ he said.

‘You were always too skinny,’ I said.

‘You okay?’

‘I’ve been worse, and I’ve been better. How’s the family?’

‘Growing up fast, and you?’

‘I haven’t seen Amy in a while. Christine is mad at me. Maybe it’s for the best until this case is over. Thanks for looking after these two.’

‘My pleasure. Your forensics guy got the paint crew on video taking out a lawyer. That helped clarify the situation for the locals and my field agents. The dead police captain is a little more difficult. We’re looking into Landry’s finances which should help corroborate their story. It might be best if Bloch and Lake aren’t found surrounded by any more dead bodies for a while.’

‘Can’t make any promises,’ said Bloch.

Kennedy and I exchanged a look.

I said, ‘See what I have to deal with?’

‘Makes a change from you creating the corpses,’ said Kennedy.

‘When is Raymond going to come back with some DNA results on the paint in the Hamptons house?’ I asked.

‘Thirty-six hours,’ said Bloch. ‘But maybe we don’t need to wait that long. The video Raymond took of the lawyer getting his head cut off, the paint job at Molly’s apartment and at the Hamptons house, we now know who killed Molly Green. We can show that to the jury, right?’

‘We don’t know who those men were working for,’ I said. ‘Not for sure. So far there’s nothing solid to link them to Patrick.’

‘But the lawyer, Corbett, he called his firm. They would’ve calledPatrick straight away and he called the disposal crew. He was the only person with motive who knew we were there.’

I hung my head.

‘Patrick, maybe his father too, were the only people who knew Raymond and I were investigating the Hamptons property, right?’ asked Bloch.

I looked at her, shook my head, said, ‘I told Vanessa. I had to.’

‘When?’

‘Right before you arrived at the house.’

‘Did she call anyone and tell them we were there?’

‘Not to my knowledge.’

‘You were with her in court the whole time, though, right?’

‘No, she used the bathroom.’

‘When?’

‘Right after I told her.’

‘So she could have tipped off the disposal team?’

‘I don’t see why, though? She said she knew nothing about Teresa Chase.’
