She looks up at me. “Say hi.”
I don’t even question it, just type.
Me: Hi.
Bubbles populate before dings sound one right after another. Moon beelines for me, stealing my phone.
“Let me add everyone so you know who’s who.”
She hands my phone back to me, and I look down.
Millie: Moon!!! Where have you been, La Vida Loca? And hi, Margot! Welcome to the Gang-Banger Sisters group chat.
Eleanor: And still hate the name. “Two girls, one cup of Chad” was a missed opportunity. And hi, Margot!
Samantha: Elle, why…like, seriously! That’s disgusting. Even if Chad is a piece of shit. P.S. Hi, Margot. I’m so sorry for everyone else, but we’ve heard so much about you. And it’s awesome to have another older sister here.
I laugh. “Who are these people?”
“These are some of my best friends in the world.” She glances up at me. “We met under precarious circumstances when I moved to Hawaii. We bonded over revenge and girlhood before I orchestrated aDirty Dancingmoment. It was epic. I thought I told you.”
She didn’t. This is so on brand for her.
“They’re the reason I met Scottie.” She smiles. “Millie is your niece’s second spiritual godmother. You being her first, obvi.”
I can’t decide if I’m trying to catch up or keep up, so I say, “Amazing, but why am I in a group chat with them?”
She winks and gets back to typing.
Moon: Margot has been invited to a group sitch… and since you girlies are living the dream, she needs the kind of advice only you can give.
“They all do…men, plural?” I say, surprised. She nods, still typing while ignoring my commentary.
Moon: Obvi you all know her history. Sad face.
“Really?” I huff, looking up at her profile. “It somehow feels worse that you wrote it and didn’t use the emoji. And does everyone you’ve ever known know my life story?”
Moon: But… The universe is smiling on her. The boys made their big move and invited her over tonight. I knew all they needed was a little push in the right direction. So glad I set this up.
My head tips back so I face the ceiling. “This is so embarrassing. And you’re a manipulative personality with narcissistic tendencies.”
“Puhleasse,” she counters, still mainly ignoring me. “You’re welcome.”
Moon: So tips and tricks are much appreciated. You girls are goddesses. Teach my big sister the ropes, please, because god knows she needs so much dick to replace the stick up her ass.
“Thanks. Thanks a lot for that,” I grumble as she grins.
But even though my sarcasm is dripping, I’m still watching the screen like I’m playing lotto numbers.
Despite the panic that I know was in that moment when Wells laid it out, I’ve never wanted something more. It’s more than the sex; it’s doing something so outside the idea of who I am that I get a rebirth.
I want to have a week of incredible sex and learn everything I’ve never known so when I leave here, I know myself in a way I was never introduced to.
“Where’d they go?” I rush out, because there aren’t any bubbles.
Nobody’s saying anything.
But before either of us can speak, our phones begin ringing—they’re FaceTiming.
