My brother is sitting across from us, and he’s staring right at me.

ADAM

I'm so attuned to Chelsea at this point that I know the second her smile drops.

Her body stiffens, her face paling. Her gaze trails somewhere over my shoulder, and it warns me to look behind me.

Shit.

James.

And he looks like he's about to murder someone.

"Ah Fuck." Of course. Of fucking course it would be just my luck that the day I chose to take Chelsea to Tender her brother also chooses to come here with his girlfriend.

“Oh no," Chelsea mutters as he shoots up from his seat. Steam rises above his head, and fury leaps from his eyes as he storms over, but I get up to intercept his advance with a hand to the chest.

“Easy tiger,” I murmur. “Take a deep breath.”

“Don't fucking give me that, Adam. Don't tell me to take a deep breath. What the fuck is going on here? Why were you kissing my sister?"

“Calm down.” I meet his gaze and raise an eyebrow. “Do you want to embarrass your sister in front of everyone?”

Already, the people seated closest to us are openly interested in our discussion. One glance from me and they tear their gazes away; however, their ears are still peeled back, listening for every sign of discord, waiting to see who throws the first punch.

I gesture towards the door with my chin. Adam's jaw clenches, but I raise my eyebrow again.

Clearly, we have a lot to talk about, but he should see how stupid it would be for us to do it here. With the way social media is set up, we might be the next viral thing by morning.

He thankfully takes the hint and storms out the door. I give a still pale Chelsea a comforting look before I follow, letting the door swing closed as her brother paces.

Security glances at us but otherwise leaves us alone.

“I thought I warned you guys to stay away from my sister.”

“Yes," is all I allow. Technically, he warned Jake to stay away from her, but it's safe to say he expected that we would be included in that warning as well.

"And?" he says. "You just decided to ignore that? Was there no other woman in the fucking New York City for you to fuck with Adam? Why my sister?"

His tone makes me wince, just from how slightly screechy it gets at the end.

I sigh, give him a few more seconds to draw his breath before I start talking.

"Okay, first of all, stop pacing because you’re making me dizzy.”

"I'm about to make you a whole lot more than dizzy."

I'm not even remotely scared of the threat. Adam might match me in size, but he has almost no real battle training, and the one time I saw him fight, he was like a badger just swinging wildly with no rhyme or reason. He was also probably drunk at the time, but still. I'm not scared of him actually fighting me beyond the embarrassment that would entail for both of us.

“Look, I get how you feel.”

“Oh, do you?” He shoots me a bitter look. "Do you fucking get how I feel you, traitorous bastard?"

“Yeah, actually, I do. Or did you forget that I have a little sister too?”

"The fuck does that have to do with anything? I'm not dating her."
