“For now.” He leans back against the seat, wincing slightly as the movement pulls at his wound.

I stay quiet for a moment, my hand still pressed against his side even though the bleeding has slowed.

“What did Gallo say to you?”

I let out a sigh and go ahead to tell him.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Nico

Gallo had his fucking hands on her.

The image is burned into my mind, his fingers wrapped around her wrist, pulling her close like he had any right to touch what’s mine.

If Eleonora hadn't been there––I didn't want to risk her getting hurt––I would’ve made sure to put a bullet in his head before leaving.

I drag a hand through my hair, exhaling sharply as the car speeds through the night. I glance down at her.

She’s fallen asleep with her head resting on my chest, hand still resting on my wound. The blonde wig is slightly askew, a few dark strands escaping at her temple.

She looks peaceful like this, no fire, no defiance, just soft breathing and the gentle rise and fall of her chest.

I reach up and carefully brush the stray hair away from her face. My fingers linger on her cheek for a moment before I lean down and press a slow kiss to her temple.

I’m glad she’s okay. The thought of losing her tonight, of Gallo taking her from me, makes something violent twist in my chest. She’s mine. Gallo can’t have her. No one can.

Gallo’s men had distracted my guards. That’s why they weren’t watching her closely enough. I’ll deal with that failure later.

I remember what she told me earlier, how Gallo said he made a mistake and now wants her instead of Sienna. I shake my head, jaw tightening.

He can only have her over my dead body.

She belongs to me now. I don’t care about the original deal with her father. When Massimo fulfills his end, I won’t honor mine. I’ll find another way. I’ll burn everything down if I have to.

I know she feels the same way about me.

She had every opportunity to run tonight. When the chaos erupted, she could have slipped away into the panicked crowd and disappeared. But she didn’t. She stayed. She fought beside me.

The driver’s voice comes through the intercom. “We’ve arrived at the mansion, sir.”

I blink, realizing I’ve been lost in my own head the entire ride. I look down at her again, then carefully lift her into my arms. She stirs slightly but doesn’t wake as I carry her out of the car and up the stairs to her bedroom.

I lay her down gently on the bed and pull the covers over her. Her eyes flutter open.

“Nico...”

“Hey, I’ll be right back,” I murmur, brushing her hair from her face. “Just need to make a quick call. We’re home.”

I lean down and kiss her forehead, lingering for a second longer, before forcing myself to pull away and leave the room.

I stop in the infirmary and clean out my wound and bandage it. Then I head down the hall.

Marco is already waiting in my office, pacing like a caged animal. The second I walk in, he turns on me.

“Any news on Gallo?” I ask.

“He and his men fled the party after you left. Same as Massimo. I take it they are meeting up to think up ways to come at us.”
