“But we’re still working out, though, right?” She blushes slightly as she bites her lip. I can’t help but chuckle.

I know exactly why she likes to work out with us. Claiming she’s actually working out would be a lie. Mostly, she pretends to while watching us do our sets. The whole thing gets her pretty worked up until she decides she’s had enough with just watching.

That’s when she starts stretching, or whatever she wants to call it, in very suggestive positions. Right in our faces. It usually only takes a minute or two before Gabe snaps and jumps her, right there in the middle of the gym while I watch. It’s come to my attention that our girl really loves it when I watch her get fucked by my best friend. And I am all for it.

“Of course, we are.” I smirk and grab her hand, pulling her to the kitchen island for breakfast.

I focus on my breathing as I turn the corner and spot my building just down theblock. I decided on a shorter jog today, since Veronica wasn’t joining me and I left the penthouse later than usual.

Normally we start our day early with a jog, then get back home and have breakfast, and an hour or so later we work out. But today we clearly started backwards with breakfast and Julian showing up. So now I’m full and exhausted, which is making jogging relatively harder than normal. I definitely won’t be putting much effort into my workout later.

As I come to an intersection right before our building, I stop and jog on the spot, looking both ways for any oncoming cars. With my headphones at full blast, I can’t hear anything around me but my music, so my eyes are truly the only thing to help me know if there’s a car coming. Thankfully, I don’t see any moving vehicles coming my way, only a few cars parked along the side or idling.

I start jogging across the road and make it halfway when movement to my left catches my attention. I look just in time to see a red car that was just idling to the side now speeding straight toward me with no intention of stopping.

My heart pounds in my chest and blood pumps in my ears as I realize just how close it truly is. I force all my strength into my legs and jump out of the way as quickly as I can. The side of the car knocks into my foot and sends me tumbling to the pavement as the car speeds off.

I hiss as I lie against the ground, an ache quickly spreading through my back and ankle, but not in a painful way that tells me anything is truly wrong. “Noah!” someone shouts my name as I sit up. “Are you okay?”

Ricky kneels beside me, looking me over before grabbing me by the arm and helping me to my feet. Liam, one of the newer guards who jogs behind me every day, comes running back from the direction the car went with his phone to his ear. He puts it away once he reaches us with a look that tells me everything I need to know.

This wasn’t an accident or coincidence. It was Victor.

I fucking knew this asshole hadn’t given up. Fuck, Veronica isn’t going to like this…

“Fucking bastard sped up too fast, I couldn’t catch the plate in time,” Liam says, panting slightly. “God damn it. I spotted that car yesterday but didn’t bother with it. Should have trusted my gut,” he growls angrily at himself.

“Give Jessie our location, I’m sure some camera nearby caught something. Although I doubt he’s dumb enough to use his own plates or show his face, so probably won’t lead to much,” Ricky tells him as he releases me.

“Already did. But you’re right, there’s no way that car is his, and we’ll probably never see it again after today. That would be a major rookie move, and clearly, he’sfar from stupid.” Liam shakes his head. “You good?”

I nod. “Yeah, just hit my foot, but I’m fine.”

“Good. Let’s get you to safety while our bosses go over what just happened and hopefully get a lead.” Ricky scans up and down the street before telling me to start moving. We’ve gathered the attention of a few bystanders, but no one that looks suspicious.

I take the first step on my foot and immediately know I’ll need to ice it.Fuck, how am I going to hide this from Veronica without her freaking out? Both Liam and Ricky frown when they notice me limping, but I try to shake it off and walk normally.

“I’m fine. Nothing that won’t fix itself with a bit of ice and rest,” I try to reassure them. “But if you could keep this to yourselves and not mention it to Veronica, that would be really appreciated.” They give each other a look, not certain that hiding this is the best course of action.

“Look, I just don’t want her worrying even more. He came after me, not her. She’s already stressed out like crazy waiting for him to show up again, I don’t want to cause her more anxiety and fear every time I leave the house.”

“Fine, we won’t say anything. But from now on, Liam will be jogging closer to you, and no more taking the same route, certainly not if Veronica is with you. Change it up daily. I don’t want this fucker trying some shit like that again.”

“Deal.” I nod as we make it back to the building.

I head up to the penthouse and barely make it three steps in when my Kitten catches me trying to sneak in. She quickly runs over and holds onto me, worry shining in her eyes. “Babe? What happened? Why are you limping?”

“It’s nothing.” I cup her cheek. “Just tripped over a damn rock and hurt my ankle slightly. Nothing major.”

“Are you sure? You don’t want to get it checked out?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I’ll just ice it a bit before our workout, then keep it up the rest of the day.” I kiss her temple, walking slowly over to the kitchen as she follows closely behind.

“Absolutely not. No working out in this condition. I don’t want you making it worse.”

I chuckle at the serious motherly tone she’s using. “Kitten, it’s my foot, not my entire body. I can still work out without putting much pressure on it.”

She rolls her eyes and grumbles something beneath her breath. “Fine, but if I see you forcing it in any way, there will be consequences.” She points her finger at me. “Now sit. I’ll get the ice pack.”
