When they finally reached Blake’s office, there were several guards waiting. Adam, Paul, Dan, and Carlos took them out easily, firing madly until the bodies fell to the floor.

Adam pushed up against the door with a shoulder, but it was locked shut. Even the key they had copied wouldn’t turn the lock. Not against whatever Blake had sealed it with.

“It’s secured with something else,” Adam said, punching his fist against the door. “Dan?”

Dan nodded and pulled a smaller set of explosives from his jacket. With a steadying, supportive hand from Carlos, Dan secured the device against the door and wired it before commanding everyone to stand back.

Far back, and brace.

The wood exploded in splinters and shattered throughout the hallway.

Adam charged ahead, using his foot to kick the last remnants of the door down. His rage was so raw, feral, and primal, that his gritted teeth dropped spit on the floor from clenching so hard.

Gun up instantly, Adam fired several shots toward Blake, not bothering to shield himself. His roar could’ve imploded planets. He emptied his mag. But none of the shots found their target.

Dan, Carlos, and Paul, rushing in after him, halted, too, when they found that none of their shots landed either.

Blake, T.B., and their leftover guards were standing behind inches of bulletproof glass. So thick that the rounds simply bounced off it.

Adam took a deep breath and smirked, coming within touching distance and tapping his fingers on the glass. “It’s thick,” he laughed. “That’s how scared you are of me?”

“Just a little insurance policy.” Blake smiled back. “You don’t get to be this powerful without a little bit of planning.”

“You’ll find eventually that your luck will reach its limit,” Adam said.

“Oh, will it?” Blake said. “And yours? All this teasing about a fifth. But, still, only four of you here today.”

Adam’s face hardened as he charged at the glass, only to have Dan and Carlos grab his arms and pull him back.

“See? You’re foolish,” Blake said. “Look at how much damage she’s done to you. She’s a weakness. She’s made you vulnerable.”

“Where are you keeping her?” Adam said.

“I’m not keeping her anywhere,” Blake smiled. “She’s dead. Put up a fucking fight, I’m told. But dead, nonetheless.”

The words were like a machete to his heart, so cold that he felt as if blood was leeching from his chest and swallowing him whole. Sweat dripped over his aching sternum, his breath heaved from collapsing lungs.

He’d killed her.

She wasdead.

“You’re fucking lying,” Carlos spat.

“No, actually,” T.B. said, no emotion in his tone. “I shot her myself. Watched her bleed out on the pavement.”

She was dead. And now the fire in his heart would never be smoldered.

“I’m gonna fucking kill you for this, and trust me, it will be fucking painful!” Dan yelled, banging his fists against the glass.

“Your deathwillbe slow,” Paul growled in agreement.

But Blake merely chuckled. “Amusing.”

“You won’t think so when we get through this glass,” Carlos said.

Adam still couldn’t find words.

“Seems like we’re at a bit of an impasse,” Blake said. He pressed a few buttons underneath his desk, and there appeared a secret exit from his office, a corridor of what appeared to be solid, impenetrable metal. Well, that’d explain why the fucking west wing was still standing.
