I think the less she has to do with him, the better. What good will it do?

When you take a life, it has repercussions. It isn’t for the faint of heart, but Nova has always been able to come to me with any problem and we talk through it. I’m glad she took the time instead of rushing into something she might regret.

“I don’t know. I feel as if I’m just turning a blind eye to what he did.”

“Nobody thinks that. It isn’t up to you to put a bullet in his brain, or a knife in his throat. That job is for us?—”

“Because you’re men?” she challenges, folding her arms over her chest. Oh, here we go.

“Yes, precisely, plus we have to cart the body away without gettin’ pulled over by the cops, then dump it so he won’t befound. All of that takes strategic planning. In any case, do you think you could really do it?”

“Can I confess something?” She bites on her lip, her face wincing slightly.

“Shoot.”

“I, um, well, I’m kind of annoyed at Sawyer.”

I frown, picking up Dozer when he paws at my shins. “Why?”

“Because me and Stella had a plan.”

My eyes widen. “You and Stella?”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t even say the words. Does Callaghan know?”

Cale Callaghan is Stella’s old man and Cash’s son, and he’s also the Mayor of New Orleans. I’d be a betting man by saying he’d not be cool with that.

“Of course not. But that bastard got out early.”

“Nova, don’t even say anythin’ else. Did you tell Saw?”

“Nope.” She hugs herself. “He’d be really mad.”

“Yeah, he would, because that plan is stupid. What were you thinkin’?”

“It’s only stupid because you think we were gonna fail.”

“No,” I state firmly. “That isn’t it, but Stella should know better. You can’t go around taking matters into your own hands. Cash would’ve been fuckin’ furious.”

She quickly tries to backpedal. “Look, it was just talk, nothing more. But now he’s here and tied up and all, I’m not so sure I can do it. I thought I could, but I don’t know. I could see him again, but actually pulling the trigger?” She shakes her head.

I rest my hands on her shoulders. “Nobody is expectin’ you to do anythin’, got me? I’ve known you a long time, since you could fit into these two hands, and you know what? I know you’re many things, Nove, but you’re not a killer.”

Her eyes glaze over. “I know, but he hurt me.”

“And we will hurt him. Sawyer already worked him over, and that’s just the beginning.”

She wipes her eyes with her sleeve and I pull her into a hug. “I’m a big goose.”

“Yeah, you are, but you’ve nothin’ to feel ashamed of, you hear? Sawyer will always do what’s right on your behalf, so will we, and we’re not gonna let that asshole hurt anyone else. Cash’s orders, but you didn’t hear that from me.”

She pulls back. “Thanks, Logey-bear, I just wanted to get that off my chest.”

Nova has been calling me and my brothers annoying nicknames since she was old enough to talk, and we all just put up with it because she’s the youngest, and we all adore her. She’s come a long way since arriving on our doorstep over a year ago, down and out and running from that asswipe Bobby. I’m proud of her and tell her as such.

“Aww, you’re gonna make me cry,” she says, sniveling.
