I ignore all of their questioning looks as I stand from the table, ready to head to class.
“Nah, man, I have no idea who she is. Any more questions before I head to class, or are we done with the inquisition forthe day?” I mutter as I grab my things, and they have a silent conversation between themselves.
“It’s all good, so long as you know we’ve got your back for whatever you need,” Cole murmurs, and I send him a shit-eating grin.
“Why, thank you, sweetheart. If I ever need someone to braid my hair, I’ll be sure to let you know.”
“Asshole.”
Yup, that’s me. The asshole who’s hiding from everyone and everything.
EIGHTEEN
HARLEY
SOPHOMORE YEAR
You knowwhat really fucking sucks? The fact that after a year of deliberating on a major, I finally settled on something that felt right to me, and yet I’ve hated every second of it. I chose to go into law, just like my mom, but the shitty part? Guess who also shares classes with me?
Fucking Savannah.
Last year, I took business just to have something to do and because it’s what the others were taking, but this year I decided to switch over to law, not knowing that it’s also Savannah’s, too.
Because of course, it is. I once saw her looking at law books in the library, but since she reads anything and everything, I figured she was just looking something up. But nope, we’re now going to be sharing classes for the next three years before going off to law school.
Yay. Fucking. Me.
I really should have paid more attention.
The only saving grace is that we’ll no doubt be heading to different postgrad schools, so I’ll finally be free of her.
It’s been a week since we came back to campus after a summer away, and I can already feel myself slipping. I had told myself I would stay away from her this year. That there would be no more keeping an eye on her, no more trips to the library to see her, and certainly no more face fucking.
I was resolute. Absolutely sure I would stay away from her no matter what.
I was a fucking liar.
It’s dark out once the professor finishes the lecture, and I clench my fists close to my sides as I rush out into the night, needing to be away from everyone and everything to make sure I don’t do what I crave.
I can do this, I can stay away from her and head home, hang out with the guys, and pretend she doesn’t exist.
I can do this. I can?—
Ah, fuck.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I squeeze my eyes shut and sigh. I just… I just fucking need one more time. Once more, andthenI’ll stay away from her.
I grunt to myself and spin around, only to bump straight into the object of my obsession.
Because shehasbecome an obsession, one I can’t seem to shake, no matter what I do.
A startled noise escapes her lips, and she swallows as her wide eyes meet mine. It doesn’t matter how many times our eyes meet, every time feels like a jolt to my nervous system. My stomach dips, my breath halts, and I have to steel my reaction to her every time.
I take one step forward. She takes one step back. Again, and again until she’s pressed against the brick of the building, ourbodies so close that an onlooker would think we’re intimate when really, we’re anything but.
Well, I guess we are in a way. I may hate her with anything in me, but even I can’t deny the way I want to kiss those pouty as fuck lips of hers until neither of us can see straight.
But that’s not something we do. Not since the day everything came crashing down around me.
